How to restart the engine by clutch smoothly?
I start EOC today and try to restart the engine by clutch. It is difficult to restart the engine smoothly. I tried different gears to pop, but the process is still rough. Anyone has a good advise?

I don't bump-start all the time, but when I do, I try to be doing about 25-30mph, and bump start it in 5th. That way, when it does fire up, the revs don't climb really high. Also, as soon as the engine fires up, I disengage the clutch again, because at that point, I'm generally stopping anyway (if you saw my extremely low-traffic commute, this would make more sense).
Someone else here wrote up a much more elaborate, and probably better, bump-start technique, but I can't recall who that was. |

Thanks for the link. I tried this morning and I can tell the big difference. Now, the engine restarts like a hybrid, very smoothly and unnoticed.

when i first started it was rough but i have gotten better. just takes a bit of practice and the right gear.

I give it a little bit of gas and let out on the clutch in whatever gear is appropriate for the given speed. I have tried this on Troy, the Geo, and the Festiva, and none of them have given me any troubles. When I pull out of my downhill/mountain drive way, I start the car using a bump start... so the engine is completely cold... still with no problems.
I'm not sure how to follow the information in the guide. It says to bump start in a higher gear than is appropriate for a given speed... well, for me, I shift at such low speeds it is probably already inappropriate to start up in that gear. For example, at 20 mph I am already in 4th gear. So should I be starting up in 5th? And regarding the extra engage/disengage... isn't this just causing extra wear and tear on the clutch? Is this really necessary if the car is already starting up with out a lot jarring? |
