How to tell an XFi from a garden variety Metro
I've had several people ask me by email how to ID an XFi motor. Is there any easy way to do specifically that? I'm not sure.
The vehicle differences I'm aware of are: - different camshaft (lower lift & duration) - number of piston rings (2 vs 3) - possibly smaller throttle body throat diameter - different ECU - taller final drive - no A/C - no passenger mirror - XFi badge on hatchback |
So the challenge then is: what would be the easiest way to know whether you were looking at an actual XFi, or a garden variety Metro with an XFi hatchback (badge) transplant?

Camshaft XFI Model Standard camshaft lobe height is 39.628 to 39.788 mm (1.5602 to 1.5665 inches). Wear limit 39.528 (1.5562 inches). Base and LSI Models Standard camshaft lobe height is 40.415 to 40.575 mm (1.5911 to 1.5974 inches). Wear limit 40.315 mm (1.5872 inches). Final Drive Gear Ratio Base Model - 4.10 XFI - 3.79 ECU No numbers (yet). XFi ECU Timing calibrated to match the XFi camshaft. VIN Number VIN number has MS instead of MR at the beginning. Only the XFi model had MS so that is one way to tell that it started out as an XFi. Doesn't mean it still has the factory motor though... Bumper Cover Trim XFi gets Flat black upper bumper cover trim. Base model gets body color on the bumper covers. WEIGHT XFI less due to no A/C MPG/HP Ratings XFi was rated at 53/58 US mpg city/hwy - 15%/18% better than a base model 3-cylinder, 5-speed Metro (46/49 mpg) |
A former Geo salesman (who today owns a couple first gen Metros) remembers asking a couple of GM engineers about differences. He said the XFi's have lighter weight seats, too.

I have read that the xfi cam is 6 degrees advanced.Does anyone know if only the intake lobes are advanced or the whole grind? I can advance the stock cam or get a regrind from Delta in Tacoma Wa. Thanks
