VW "speed camera lottery" experiment rewards drivers who obey speed laws

This is creative and awesome!

Speed cameras capture all licence plates, not only the speeders'.

The idea is that the speeders' fines fund a lottery that pays out to the non-speeders.

Quote:
Average speed before experiment: 32 km/h
Average speed during experiment: 25 km/h

The states that I drive in are so broke there would be no reason for them to share the fines.

I have no interest in being photographed in public for any reason. The US is not a police state and until I break a law I should remain anonymous.

If I see an intersection camera I make sure I give it the finger. It is no business of theirs. It is the least I can do and would encourage you to do the same.

...we weren't England in 1776, and we're not (yet) England in 2010, but putting "recording" cameras at every intersection sure smacks of an English Big Brother-ship!

Along the same off topic vein, and this isn't directed at anyone particular in the thread, but I cannot understand how most Americans are perfectly fine with private business collecting reams of data on them, w/ little or nothing in the way of protections, but complain about big brother the second the words cameras and government are used in the same sentence even though there are probably fairly strict regulations regarding what can be done with that information, the ability to change what's done with that information, and someone can even prohibit it's collection in the first place via a change in or challenge to whatever.

I can chose who I do business with I can also chose to use cash and not identify myself. I can not chose when government starts demanding and tracking my actions.

It's pretty much impossible to determine whether or not the businesses you are going to are collecting and/or selling information about you. Most people have to get loans and use bank accounts, so in there's plenty of information there, and even without those entities can buy profiles of you and/or your household based on your habits on the web or even what you watch on TV. Ironically, the only control you can exert over that information, assuming you even know it's present and can prove it violates some sort of law, is through the government.
