hypermiling in 2009 hyudai genesis

when driving using (automatic transmission) vs (manual shifting) of gears, will I hurt the transmission by shifting into NEUTRAL whenever possible, even at highway speeds, and then back to OVERDRIVE position (while at highway speed) when needing to maintain minimum speed limit?

example: drive 75, shift to neutral, eventually car coasts down to 55, then shift into drive again to build speed.

Can your car be flat towed? if so then you can do it engine off if not then only with the engine on.

thank you.

I did it in my 2002 Escort with no problems. I do it I'm my Forte as well, but it has a manual auto.

Look in the index of your owners manual for 'towing'. It should tell whether the car needs to be dollied, trailered or if it's flat towable.

I will check my owner manual about the towing....i am unsure. car is rear wheel drive.

as for flat towing you genesis im pretty sure you cant. i work as a mechanic for hyundai and own three none of mine can be flat towed and every time some one asks and i look it up on the hyundai service site it says no . and to your question will shifting into neutral hurt your vehicle. answer is no if it would damage it in anyway the transmission control module wouldnt let the trans shift. im not saying it wont let you put it in reverse while in forward. but if you try to downshift from say 5th to 2 at certain speeds the pcm/tcm take over and hold it in a higher gear until engine rpm lower and then down shifts again. if you cant find it in your owners manual i'll look it up for you.

drv2die,

Thank you. I did find the towing info you mentioned. As for the shifting from 5th to 2nd, I also realized that, too, when I first got the car in April. It wouldn't shift and I figured it must be computer controlled. Overall, I still shift to Neutral when possible as said before. I just wanted to make sure that I was not going to screw up the transmission prematurely.
