Hyundai Elantra mpg

I've seen a lot of different claims for mpg on the new current generation. I'm looking for non-hypermiling numbers. Just sensible driving at highway speeds. Thanks.

EPA Fuel Economy booklet says:

2012 - 29/40 mpg A6 & M6
2011 - 29/40 mpg A6 & M6
2010 - 26/34 mpg A4
2010 - 25/34 mpg M5

The Elantra is rated 5mpg better than the Sonata in all areas, so I'd expect you could average 43 mpg or better.

I've had a 2012 Elantra for about two months. So far, I'm getting about 34 miles per gallon with mostly highway driving and a some NYC driving. Does anyone have the new Elantra and can recommend any great suggestions specific for that car to raise mpg?
Thanks! John

Drive 55, check search popular mechanics testing of 2012 focus and elantra, both got 47+ mpg at 55 mph. Pretty darn impressive.

Check around this site. You'll find that most mpg-improving techniques are universal and not specific to any one car.

My wife's car is a 2012 AT Elantra. We averaged 38 mpg over 1200 miles of highway travel driving it at the speed limit (up to 80 mph in west Texas) with tires inflated to 32 psi. Then I inflated the tires to 51 psi and drove at a sane 60-65 mph for the next 1100 miles. We averaged something like 44.65 mpg for those 1100 miles.

I can consistently get 45 mpg trip averages on highway trips >15 miles with our Elantra by keeping speeds around 55-60 mph. Our medical center is 10 miles away. I got 35.5 mpg yesterday morning driving on the highway ~8 miles and 2 miles of city streets. On the trip back, I took a city/country route back with a warmer engine, and averaged 42.2 mpg.

Plan your routes to minimize stops, try to keep your TPS at or below 19-20, neutral glide down hills if you're comfortable doing so, and increase your tire pressures. 51 psi makes the rear end skitterish without luggage and passengers, so experiment until you find what works for you.
