I love a good tail wind!

81.8 mpg (US) / 2.88 L/100 km @ 39 mph average speed over 50 mi / 80 km (includes sub/urban driving on either end).

The entire round trip details put it in sober perspective though:

100 mi / 160 km r.t., secondary rural roads, in breezy conditions (17 mph / 27 km/h, with higher gusts). Driving with load (DWL) was the main technique, with some engine off coasting at either end, where appropriate.

I seriously thought there was something wrong with the car on the first (head wind) leg. I checked the parking brake twice! DWL, I was nowhere close to the rough "70 at 70" target (70 mpg US at 70 km/h (43.5 mph)) I sometimes use as a guide.

The whole picture:

First leg was pretty lousy: 65 mpg (US) / 3.6 L/100 km

Round trip came in at 72.4 mpg (US) / 3.25 L/100 km

The return leg sure was fun though!

Tail winds are awesome!

A year ago I had a perfect, fantastic, musta been 40mph tailwind blowing right up the tailpipe for 110 miles. Did INTENSE P&G the whole time... coasted forever, and accelerated quickly! It was 0 degrees F and yes, I know, a short fill which can skew numbers, but it figured out to be 70 mpg! Skewed or not, it hadta be really good. And it was straight E85.

I won the wind lottery again today, big time.

30-40 kph (19-25 mph) quartering tailwind for most of a 750 km (466 mi) drive northeast along the St Lawrence river (tasdrouille, I beeped as I passed Q.C.! When I go back in the spring, want to meet up again?).

75 mpg (US) / 3.14 L/100 km / 90 mpg (Imp);

49 mph average speed, simply driving with load where traffic permitted, going with the flow where it didn't. A small amount of EOC down maybe half a dozen long-ish hills.

Add to that the fact the car was packed to the roof, sitting low on the suspension and you can call me tickled. :)

The second half of the trip, tomorrow, doesn't look quite as lucky weather wise. We'll see!
