Check out this celica. I found it here: The Ugliest Cars at SEMA 2011 - Popular Mechanics

How aerodynamic do you all think this celica might be?

Possibly worse than stock.

Ha ! I ran across that image the other day.

I would say worse no doubt.

Huge frontal area hit, and the side pieces where the quarter panel glass is most likely tear the air to shreads.

Wouldn't the covered wheel wells help a bit with the aerodynamics though?

Audi

It reminds me of the AUDI concept car featured in the movie 'Minority Report' or 'I Robot',can't be sure.
I think the protruding wheel covers would aggravate frontal area enough to offset any benefit.

:

It was I Robot. I love that freaking car

Anyway the body work looks fantastic, but it's awfully huge to be aerodynamic in my opinion. Way too wide.

Go look at the rest of the gallery in that link. YIKES!

that car is HORRIBLE.

the tail of the car is where most of the drag occurs, and that car has a lot of short tail.

but the car is much wider than stock and look at how much it tapers after the front wheel covers, there would be lots of turbulance around the doors and then once again the wind is being pushed out after the doors because of the wide wheel covers.

A picture is worth a thousand words, right?

I say it's a dead even draw at best. I'm 98% sure the custom car is less aero than the stock car.

Most likely those air catchers will capture a pocket of air, while the main air flow goes over it. I don't think they are the main issue.

The main issue is the turbulence caused by the protruding wheel wells. It's nice that the wheels are covered, but that will not make up for the additional turbulence caused by the outcropping of the wheel wells.

Just my opinion, would have to wind tunnel both these cars to be really sure.

I'm positive the creator of this custom car was trying to evoke emotion and initial response over any aerodynamic goals. Maybe as suggested the Audi in I-Robot was an inspiration or influence.

Certainly the Lexus LFA was an inspiration for some of the details.
