Idea for Grill Shutter
I've been trying to think of a way to make a bottom grill block that I can open and close from inside my car while driving in case the engine gets too hot, which it will if I put a block on the bottom grill. I thought of having like a pulley system that would go through the car under the hood which would involve me drilling through a lot of things that I don't want to drill through haha.
Yesterday I was at a store and saw a big remote control car, then this happened :eek: :D :thumbup: I could take apart the car to just leave the motor and attach it to some coroplast to make a grill block that I can open and close from inside my car with the remote. Doesn't seem too hard, once the holidays are over and I have some more money I'm gonna try it out! |

I am thinking if you open your vent system up it will become a bigger source of drag than its stock configuration was, If it runs hot you could remove a section of the grill block and leave what remains to add what benefit it can. |

The bottom grill would be blocked with coroplast, then a large flap (the grey box) would be attached to the motor so it could go in or out.

The best (also simplest) solution I saw for this was on someone's white car here on EM. A huge front bumper that blocked all grill inlets had a square hole on it that was blocked by a flat plate sliding door from behind. The door moved on tracks (simple slits/groove holding the door parallel to the face of the bumper) allowing sideways motion by a cable from inside.
I doubt you will be able to use anything from the RC car. Unless the complexity of the gears,pulleys,sliders,joints makes it non practical. You will have to power the receiver(RC car) somehow,then turn it off when not in use etc. Depending on your design "attaching" a door to a motor is not easy considering it will have to operate while air pressure is pushing on the door as you drive. Extreme gear reduction is going to be required for the RC car motor to achieve the torque needed to move a door. Just my opinion. I would do the simplest sliding door on a cable and I bet even that will need the bugs worked out too before it will work as intended. Barna |

Sounds like more trouble than it's worth. I was thinking about figuring out how to move a door lock mechanism (there's already a button to lock/unlock and provide mechanical function) and somehow place it just behind the grill to open/close a shutter.
But instead I just use duct tape and watch my coolant temp.:D At any rate, good luck. |
I used power lock motors and have had no problem with them:)
