idea of hybrid motorcycle
now i havent looked into the real possibilitys vs amp created to amper use on conversion but ....
what if you took a small motor like a weedeater or chain saw and used it to turn a alternator or combo aternator to achieve 24 volts or other type of motor to make energy then send it thru controller to final motor drive. im not saying this is a viable idea but just a thought to ponder on. send feedback and yes i know a 2 stroke motor would not be a good alternative and more pollution but a 4 stroke of equivelent size with some tourqe. or to make full electric bike but use 20cc motor powering alternator to make a plug in hybrid type cycle |
The idea is viable, but you need a bigger engine.
Here is one a guy I know is building. http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...rike-4606.html |

Something I've thought of is using a small displacement single-cylinder ICE and somehow incorporating a permanent magnet motor to it, with batteries. I think it could be connected for battery assist (ex. acceleration) then it could cruise relatively efficiently at whatever speed you could get out of it. The motor could regen to provide braking force and recharge the batteries a bit. The engine could drive the motor in battery charging mode if battery SOC got too low. I suspect a relatively small battery pack might be used for quick acceleration. |
I would think a short range electric motorcycle with a larger battery bank in a trailer would work just as well, or put a 1KW honda generator in the trailer, but it would only be enough to push you along at 30-35mph at best.

I am working on a similar project.
Series Hybrid with Hubmotor - MotoredBikes.com: Motorized Bicycle Forum I don't know if it is going to be practical, I'm just trying to learn about hybrid technology and I had an old weedeater motor. |

I know there are several ev drivers who carry a small honda generator with them incase they run out of juice and run that, plug it into the charge outlet, and drive home. So it is viable to have an engine run an alternator to drive on. That's what the metra trains do itf i'm not mistaken, they are diesel "hybrids". But what size it would have to be, i'm not sure. The Chevy volt kind of does the same with an engine that creates power to drive and recharge the batteries when they get low, but when it's running on only gets about 40mpg's, which is no where near the mpg equivelent of a full ev vehicle.
