Immortal Geo Metro ?
Hey folks,
I picked up a Scion XB which the internet forums tell me can pull 40-50mpg depending on speed etc. I would like to pick up a manual Geo Metro to do the heavy lifting. I have spent a small amount of time reading various forums and finding that some have difficulty finding the parts needed to repair the manual transmission. I like the idea of maintaining and repairing a vehicle for 30 years but I can imagine the auto industry can't be too keen on the idea. I am finding rebuild parts on ebay and autozone but I don't know anything about transmission rebuilds so I thought I would ask here. |
There's a couple of guys on GeoMetroForum.com who rebuild them. EVMetro, who frequents this forum too, does them....but because he does them right, he isn't cheap.
From what I know, finding the parts is particularly difficult. |
Shouldn't the transmission last 200,000 or 300,000 miles?

Metro transmissions aren't known for being particularly strong. When the clutch cable stretches, you end up killing your synchros. And, apparently, the 5th gear is known for getting stripped by those who do a lot of highway driving, from what I've heard. Considering most people neglect these cars in general, the transmissions are decent enough for what they're meant to do. They're just not bulletproof/resistant to said neglect. |
