Interesting *French* document about aerodynamics and Mathis 333

http://inter.action.free.fr/publications/auto-eco.pdf

Sorry, this document is in *French*, but it has a lot of interesting drawings and data.

It talks about having an economical car through aerodynamics, weight and using the correct power. The chapter 4 (p. 13-25) is dedicated to the Mathis 333. The chapter 7 (p. 32-47) show lots of examples with data.

To help you :
  • Cxp = Cd
  • Sf = A (m²)
  • 1 km = 0.622 miles
  • 1 l = 0.264 gallon US
  • To get mpg, divide 235.2 by the l/100km. Ex : 5 l/100km = 47.04 mpg

The conclusion is that we can have today a consumption of 1.5l/100km (156mpg) at 90km/h (56mph), ie dividing it by 4, by :
  • dividing weight by 3 : from 1200kg to 400
  • dividing aerodynamic (S.Cx alias A.Cd) by 2 : from 0.8m² to 0.4
  • dividing hp by 5 : from 100hp to 20
and with a mechanical/electrical hybrid system it should be lowered to 1l/100km (235mpg).

Have fun,

Denis.

Wow, merci beaucoup! Would that paper be in English it would probably be the single most useful freely available general paper on the efficiency part of fuel economy.

Even if you can't read French, it's really worth a look if only for the pictures. Page 12 would make a very nice poster imho.

Hi,

The only vehicle they seem to have left out of their otherwise comprehensive paper, is the Aptera Typ-1 with it's 0.11Cd.

Insight? Probably the closest production car to some of those concepts. Of course, Honda sold about 3 of them in Europe, so...

Hi Groar, thanks for the link.
One of the cars did 3.7L/100k at an average of 50 kph.....back in 1945!! Another appears to have done 3.475L/100k at an average of 65kph in 1942....
And we have modern cars with "superior technology" that consume many multiples of this. Progress? Regress more like!!

ollie

Hi folks.

Thanks a lot for your comments. It is pleasant.

You can see few pictures of the smoke wind tunnel I have made with my students here :
