Jim's Really-Bad-Idea Thread, AKA DIY Jetta Hybrid

Hey there,
Does anyone know anything about the VW Syncro AWD system?

My boyfriend drives a second generation Jetta and we got to thinking that the marriage of the rear end of a Syncro, and the 400 amp Alltrax and 6 inch Advance DC motor sitting in my dining room would be a happy one.

We'd have to add an auxiliary transmission oil pump or swap in a manual for electric only driving. Any thoughts on this DIY hybrid scheme?

syncros ran different floor pans...... :( apart from that, great idea, take a syncro - remove the prop and bolt the motor in its place!

Homegrown Hybrid...

Sounds like a great if not complex idea... I would love to design an electric assist for most cars just for in town. Just not sure where to start. Know of anything?

Is the floor pan a surmountable problem? From what I've gathered, Syncro fans cut out the stock trunk floor and weld in one cut from a Syncro. My guy, "The Other Jim" (we just call him Tiz to avoid confusion :P ) managed to weld the exhaust back together yesterday, so I imagine he could handle sheet metal.

What shall derail my plans next?

Problem: I don't think any Volkswaqen A2 platform vehicles were ever sold in north America with Syncro. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I'm not totally sure but looking on wiki-"bloody"-pedia it would suggest that is the case.

looks like you may have to buy and ship the panels from the old continent ;)
