Just getting started
 

Hello everyone. It's a pleasure to be here. I have a 1998 Chevy Metro with a 4cyl automatic. I am looking for some cheap and quick ways to get started improving my gas mileage. Any ideas?

Welcome. You've got a good vehicle for fuel economy driving. Accelerate gently, keeping rpms below 2000, and keep your speeds down to 55-60, and you should top 45 mpg with your automatic Metro. 50 mpg is possible, tank after tank after tank.

I drive 120 miles a day (round trip) for work. Yesterday, I drove between 50 and 60 the whole way home and really noticed a difference. I used to have a 3cyl Metro, but the frame rotted and the engine died, so I got the 4cyl for free from my parents. I like the car, but I wish it got the mileage that the 3cyl got. I'm considering making some easy modifications to the aerodynamics, I'm just not real sure where I'm going to start.

A grill block would be a good start in Winter weather.

Having recently done a Metro brake job because the calipers were dragging big time due to corrosion, I'd say make sure the brakes are NOT dragging.

I have been thinking about a grille block and removing the passenger side mirror, as well as some smooth wheel covers. The brakes appear to be okay. The front ones were done not too long ago, and I just rebuilt the rear brakes. I'm also planning to lighten the car as much as possible.

I got some of the materials to start my grille block and to make the block off plate for the removal of the passenger side mirror. Looking forward to getting this project going.
