Hey everybody!
Early this year I became the proud owner of a EJ8 ;)
Its a 1996 ex sedan with about 199k miles, burns no oil and runs solid...most importantly its a 5 speed!
now the less great, its an EX so its got the higher compression head and short gears with a 4.25 final drive.
so its rated at 27 city and 33 highway (i think) and on my last tank I averaged better than 38 so there is potential with proper driving and some aero mods!
so far I've bumped the tire pressure to sidewall 44psi and removed the sideview mirrors and replaced with convex mirrors! :D
I'm looking forward to learning lots and building my civic into a fuel sipping work car

Being a 96, it should be OBDll compliant making a Scan Gauge usable.

Airdam and grill block are wicked cheap and easy to do. Also, get rid of power steering. These little cars don't really need it and it uses significant fuel. With those and good use of EOC and clutch starting you'll get up to 50mpg fairly soon, when you're determined.

To echo MobilOne, definitely add a gauge of some sort, whether ScanGauge, EcoMeter, OBDII Dongle/Smartphone app, or something else shiny.

California98Civic suggested airdam and grill block, I've been rolling with both, but I just ripped my air dam off. Working on something new.

Go with synthetic oil and a good set of low rolling resistance tires when it's time to change.

My fave mod so far, dollar for dollar is a B&M short throw shifter ($60) and Energy Suspension poly shifter bushings ($10).

Yes a lower grill block and air dam is a planned mod. Also the steering rack is loose enough that I am going to replace it. Would a manual steering rack work? not only cheaper...if it saved me gas I'd like that even better!

and yes LRR tires are on the list!!!
I build a custom shifter bushing and have a nicer shift knob on the way!

I just removed the hardware and drained the fluid. Some people loop the lines. I've been rolling this way for four years without trouble. No need for a new rack.

However my right drivers wheel has enough play in the steering rack I'm considering replacing it.
Will a manual rack work in a EX?

Welcome to the board, there is much D16 knowledge here and we are all passionate about our prized honda 90'S chassis.

38mpg is great for no real modifications. My favorite mod is still just a vacuum gauge and a steady foot. My car has no aero mods with an ex/si transmission and I'm getting 40mpg in town with most of my driving being at 50mph.

yeah I like my civic! some people are like "you drive....that?" but they have no idea lol
Right now I am working on replacing the o2 sensors, and that should bump my FE up a little more!
