From the aero-pen of Irwin Kommenda, circa 1938, a true beauty. I will take mine with VW's new 75HP, 3 cylinder Turbodiesel, thanks. With many of the major German automobile manufactures reaching back to their 30's heritage for design inspiration, we can always hope.

Talk about the spiritual predecessor of the 1L! :eek: Actually I wish they'd have done a "retro" 1L ala "New Beetle"! I'd be more inclined to open my wallet for one of those!!!

75hp? It did 81mph with 33bhp. It'd probably do highway speeds with a 250cc, ~20hp motorbike engine. I'll take mine with a Honda CBR250R engine and a floor mounted six speed.

And it had better have a cup holder! I have three cars and none of them have cup holders!

I see that one model used license plate as a partial grill block, however if it had air cooled engine at back, what was grill there for?

WV had Karmann Ghia at one point, which this type 64 reminds me of a bit, sure they are relative different cars, but put wheel well covers for ghia and it is not that far.

New WV XL1 is also something bit similar, just modern version of it.

Yes...I was going to say that I see a strong family resemblance between it and the 356 that came not too long afterwards (not counting the unpleasantries of the 1940's...of course!) Aero-pr0n indeed! :thumbup:

Wow. That is just fabulous, words cannot describe the respect I have for that bodywork. That took some serious skills to get curves like that.

The VW Type 1 motor is air AND oil-cooled. Perhaps the grill was to protect an external oil-cooler placed in the air-flow. I have seen many contemporary racing Beetles and Porsches with front-mounted auxiliary oil coolers.
