The King of Random is going to Court

I do not know how many of you follow Grant Thompson, but he is one Crazy Canadian! He recently fired his gun repeatedly inside his own home, once lit gasoline on fire in his work room, and he makes and sets off all kinds of explosives, etc. In one video, he poured acid from a car battery while wearing flip-flops and boiled the acid without doing more about the fumes than going outside. Often his only safety equipment is gloves and eye protection while he makes things burn, explode, and emit noxious fumes. He has gone to the desert for a number of videos, but often we comment in the video "How often do his neighbors call the police?" According to https://gizmodo.com/prominent-youtub...los-1822192991, police were called out twice, and not for the most dangerous things he has done on video, and he is facing felony charges.

I am surprised his neighbors did not call the police more and they have not brought up more charges, but I imagine the prosecutor will enjoy his or her research. Grant has uploaded hours of evidence that has been fairly entertaining at times.

Projects he has made that I want to try:
A kiln like his metal foundry (to fire clay in a barbecue)
Make clay from dirt. Hopefully this is at the bottom of my list because it sounds horribly boring, yet compelling.
Styroslicer (foam cutter)
Sugar rockets
Dry ice cream (once bought the ingredients, but was not able to impress my nephews)
Spot welder

He vacuum forms, sand casts, and has probably done other projects that I found interesting and potentially useful.

He should just move out to new Mexico.
No one cares what you do.

redpoint5 01-22-2018 06:14 PM

Sounds like what I imagine the typical Russian to be.

I can't condone activities that unduly pose a threat to others, but do what you will to your own property and at your own risk. Then again, socialized medicine shouldn't have to pick up the bill for his antics. Perhaps it was socialized medicine that gave him the confidence to act crazy!

DSMHondaGuy 01-22-2018 06:22 PM

I like him, but he ought to have known better than to try to act like an American! (I'm just kidding)

Seriously though there has been a few people that screwed themselves, such as this guy
https://www.youtube.com/user/FPSRussia

He was actually in the county jail a couple months back, they got him on some bull **** honestly but got him non-the less. Using explosives for commercial purposes without a license, or some such bull ****. (It was tannerite mostly, **** anyone in the state can buy up to 50lb of and go play with. But he did it on camera and uploaded it to youtube. I feel so much safer now.

Yes, that does seem tenuous. I would be happy if the judge told him:
1. Get licenses for what you are doing.
2. Use proper safety equipment and precautions
3. No explosions within city limits and
4. If any kids get hurt trying to copy you you are finished.

I'm generally against all but #3.

The government should require licenses for as few things as possible. The beautician license quickly comes to mind as an absurd thing for the government to regulate with regards to the lady that had a hair braiding business. How are you going to screw up hair braiding, and how is government bureaucracy going to prevent the harm?

In the same vein, the government should have as little personal safety regulation as possible. There's no way I'm allowing the government to tell me to wear safety glasses while mowing the lawn, for instance. It's none of their dang business!

I get the "monkey see, monkey do" argument, but there are plenty of irresponsible behaviors that kids are inclined to imitate. Among the most harmful to kids these days is single parenting (not that there aren't excellent single parents, or extenuating circumstances). The government can't regulate away single parenting, and it cannot regulate away unhealthy behaviors that children are susceptible to mimic.

Are there even laws about proper safety procedures and equipment? I do not know how a judge would enforce that, either. I just want it officially stated he needs to do things more safely.

jcp123 01-22-2018 10:49 PM

I have never heard of this guy but I already like him. Endangering others is basically my only no-no, along with asking his fellow taxpayers to foot the bill for any injuries. I kind of agree he'd be at home in the desert...which is also maybe why I've also always been called to it.

GL to the Canadian.

Attention-seeking behavior garners attention. Details at eleven.

Personally, I prefer the Primitive Technology guy. The videos are quiet and relaxing. The only concession to the audience is he wears pants.

The one where he smelts iron out of red bacteria he scoops out of a creekbed is probably my favorite.

I remember FPSRussia. He demoed a full-automatic quadcopter before anyone else. For things that go bang, I like Ian McCellan at Forgotten Weapons, esp. the Puckle Gun.

All that needs is the flintlock mechanism replaced by a Tesla coil and it's perfect for my Steampunk Zepplin. (Did you know steam has 60% the lift of helium, twice that of hot air*?)

What is your source for him having licenses? If so, that is another thing he should have mentioned. How difficult would that have been? http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1516736224

Apparently he has injured himself and a friend once each.

Here a high-schooler calls him out for safety: https://www.reddit.com/r/chemistry/c...kb&sh=7f0f64f8

Favorite quotes: "He's a jackass with a voice for broadcasting" and "Nice hair and energy. Chemistry tricks are rather pedestrian. Good marketer too."

“It makes it seem like I am a irresponsible YouTuber who is blowing stuff up,” he said. https://www.sltrib.com/news/2018/01/...d-experiments/

"SOUTH JORDAN — A South Jordan man who told police he blows things up for his YouTube channel has been charged, along with a friend, with igniting an unknown substance that caused a large blast that injured his friend." https://www.ksl.com/?sid=46238745&nid=148

He is blowing up stuff and he injured his friend. If I get a papercut playing sudoku that is one thing, but if I think it is funny to put hand sanitizer on my nephew's forehead and he flushes the alcohol from his eyes by crying, I am being irresponsible--to say the least.

Demoed in CGI/special effects. The concept is valid, but I have yet to see a working demonstration.

I like David's antics.

I want to see something like Colin Furze and Grant Thompson's lovechild with a death wish blowing up stuff in the middle of Detroit and when law enforcement tries to cause them trouble based on blatant violations of law on safety as shown in their videos, they prove everything was CGI and acting.
"You never set your landlord's car on fire?!"
"I don't have a landlord, I have a landlady, and she has never owned a car because she is legally blind."

I am not sure how many viewers they would lose when everyone realized it was fake, but then again, WWF is still around for some reason.

Next you'll tell me you can't just pull an AA-12 out of a bucket of water and empty it.

Explosives are kind of like tide pods.
Except someone dies or losses limbs.

Not really, if you know what you're doing and do it correctly, commercial and military grade explosives are very safe.

It's the home made **** that's dangerous, generally because the explosive is much more unstable and the method of ignition more crude.

Our Drill Sergeants got medieval on Soldiers not handling grenade training properly.

ASV 01-28-2018 12:39 PM

I am sure that if you know what you are doing and handle them properly Tide
pods will give you clean clothes and not extreme intestinal distress

Yeah I always thought that was dumb as **** that they were so anal about it. Short of someone pulling the pin and letting the spoon fly, they're pretty ****ing safe it's not like "oh no I dropped it" (before pulling the pin) is going to result in any damn thing but you looking dumb.

I get it, but at the same time, ****, relax a little if they were that sensitive to impact they wouldn't be used. Sadly they're that wound tight because half or more of the people coming through basic have never even held a firearm before and are increasingly lacking in common sense. Also it's on their head if something happens.

I'm sure what screwed this particular YouTube guy is lack of manufacturing license, even firework manufactures have to have licenses that and if he was setting **** off in city limits. well that was just asking for it. Though I think dry ice "bombs" and such shouldn't be considered any form of ordnance as they're really just noisy and little else.

What are the odds he encourages his viewers to injest Tide™ Pods. I finally saw a picture of those. Who thought that that wasn't an attractive nuisance when it came up in the board room?

Xist 01-28-2018 09:50 PM

Can we convince him (or his sidekick) to make Gummy Tide pods?! :D

Xist 07-21-2018 03:38 AM

The King of Random has been gone from the King of Random Channel for so long that Sidekick Nate found another Grant who convinced us he did not want to be there.

Then there is this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRkFW7nbBoE

At first it seemed like they were collaborating, but it looked more like Grant finally found the person he wanted to be when he grew up--The Hacksmith, who seems to have far cooler equipment and projects, and a two-story shop that they have already outgrown.

I am going to watch more of The Hacksmith's videos. Curiously, he has about 35% as many subscribers as TKR and his top videos has about half as many views.

Somewhere in this one Grant said:

Quote:

I've learned a lot about legalities recently. I actually sat down with the city yesterday. I sat down with the entire city, the chief of police, all the fire marshals, the risk assessment manager, the mayor of the city. Yeah I learned a lot about what the city thinks is legal. Nobody knows and it's a gray area for everybody.
There's no right way to do anything. Do you get caught and do you get prosecuted or not?
