late shifting in a 96 tercel
I just bought a 96 tercel with 160.000k and I noticed that it shifts late
when it goes into third gear im doing about 75 kms an hour
it shifts fine doesnt jolt or anything. Just late
is this normal and if not what is the solution to this problem
Its a three speed auto. I think its shifting late in all three gears

Got any idea when the last time the tranny filter and a flush were performed? Flushed our Escort at 60k after it got kind of goofy about going into overdrive. The filter was a black mess and I used Mercon V fluid. Solved the problem pretty instantly.

Now I make sure to change the tranny filter every 50k or so. No problems to report. I'd at least give it a try, routine maintenance anyway.

No I'm not sure when it was changed if ever. I am thinking I might change it. This way ican rule that out as the cause

Check to see what it has to force shifting. Could be an adjustable cable or vacuum solenoid. If cable then it can be adjusted. If vacuum solenoid, could be a vacuum leak possibly bad solenoid.

If its just late shifting then it sounds like something is out of adjustment like a cable or rod or something.

This makes me think 160,000,000 miles. Very impressive!

Good luck with your repair.

old oil varnish can clog the tiny passageways of auto transmissions and cause shifting problems. i would add seafoam trans tune following the instructions on the can to clean out old varnish, then replace the trans filter, and refill with fresh ATF. i've had excellent experiences with seafoam's motor oil and gas treatment and heard great things about their trans tune product as well so i would give that a shot.

good luck.
