Leaking power steering lines on my Subaru

After attempting to interpret my "service plan," I finally took my car to a garage. They wasted a great deal of time getting ahold of the "service provider," who said they do not cover hoses, although the pump, engine, transmission, alternator, etc, would be covered.

Allegedly.

Joey said that it would be $495 for a new line, he said it is only available from Subaru for $320, plus $95 for labor.

I have the money, I just really do not want to spend it.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

[No, I do not need power steering. I just really like it!]

I'm guessing its the high pressure line.

Find out what fittings it uses, and see if a local place that makes hydraulic lines for tractors can make a close enough copy.

TheEnemy, that is an interesting idea. I will keep it in mind.

The shop charged me $7 to replace the fluid after our phone conversation where I said that I did not want to keep adding fluid because it would eat my belts. My alternator on my first car went out for that and that may have been why I needed to replace the rack and pinion also.

The best price that I can find on-line is $229.95 for "OES Genuine" at autopartswarehouse.com and $247.13 for "Genuine OEM" at autohausaz.com. However, jcwhitney.com has universal hoses for $29.29 and fittings for $12.40. I would just need to figure out the proper sizing.

This was interesting:

LEGACY SUBARU LEGACY 1994 Spontaneous Explosion And Fire Destroying 1994 subaru and damaging another car and adjacent home. fire inspector assessed cause as ruptured power steering hose.
LEGACY SUBARU LEGACY 1994 Vehicle Consumed By Fire. fire inspector's report attributes cause to power steering hose separation at pump.

AutoMD.com has a replacement guide.

Well, I am going to get back to not failing. I hope that you guys have a great day.
