Good job 0n the belly pan and the rear wheel strakes, in particular.

California98Civic 03-24-2014 09:12 AM

Nice fun thread idea... subscribed.

Here is one of my favs: lower side skirts made from painted and then plasti-dipped rain gutter. But I have had difficulty with attachment because I insist on using free leftover hardware, lol. I'm thinking of using a little of my double-sided automotive trim tape to better secure it. Thoughts?

if the underside of your OEM is painted (i think honda side skirts are not painted anyways :P), this Outdoors double sided tape from 3m at home depot works very well. I use this to attach my side skirts on my Sti, it's held up for 9months. If your oem side skirt is not painted, then this might not work :)

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Scotch-1-...1-DC/100575385

Does the oem sideskirt have any existing holes on the bottom to use as mounting points?

Gasoline Fumes 03-24-2014 02:57 PM

I'm working on a belly pan and something for the rear. These are my current aero mods.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...odslabeled.jpg

The side skirts are Coroplast. The splitter is the top of an extra bumper cover. The tire deflectors are baler belting. The wheel covers are plastic serving trays. The grill block is cut from a pickup truck bed liner.

Thanks Gasoline Fumes, you've given me an idea on designing my own front wheel deflectors. :)

With my rear wheel boat tails and side skirts, my car looks a bit "empty" on the front bumper

California98Civic 03-24-2014 03:49 PM

Hey gasolinefumes, what function is the solar charger for? Battery? How well does it work for you?

Oh! And jdeisol, yes the OEM underside is painted, but by me, with plastidip... probably not good for any kind of tape, eh?

Yeah, it just keeps the big marine battery topped off since the car often sits unused for up to a week. And it makes me feel better about EOC up to my driveway at night. I know the battery will get charged back up before I use the car again. It also should increase my range with the alternator disabled. I've been doing that on short trips lately. The solar panel doesn't put out much power, but it did charge up my old battery from too-dead-to-crank, to normal cranking speed in a few hours of direct sunlight. I've learned to park facing the sun. :D

This is the one I bought, but sometimes I wonder why I didn't just buy one from Tractor Supply or Harbor Freight that comes fully assembled.

Here is a pre-view of my Kamm-back project. These are two panels being held in place prior to attachment by the makeshift jigs I made.

Did you cut the top off a bumper? Any details would be much appreciated.

Yes, I cut off the top section of an extra bumper cover and used it as a splitter. Obviously it perfectly matches the contour of the bumper on the car. It sticks out past the original bumper, moving the stagnation point much lower. I hope I'm using that term correctly! I believe it's keeping air from going under the car without adding frontal area. No ABA testing done, but I did get my best highway trip mileage after installing it.

Gasoline Fumes, that is some exceptional mileage from a Civic Wagon, especially considering your location and the weather this winter.

Not hard to get good MPG with Hondas my wagon was getting 40MPG easily

That's a great idea.

How did you attach it to the bottom, and how much did it raise up your mpg?

Screws from underneath. And a few carriage bolts for extra strength. I can push snow around with it. :D

Other factors were involved, so I can't say for sure, but it seemed to give me about 5 MPG at around 55-65 MPH on highway trips. And that's compared to an airdam I had on it before. I barely believe the results myself. :)

wagonef8 03-31-2014 08:37 PM

Here is the aluminum version of my grill block off. I used the license plate bolt location to bolt it to the bumper

I don't think enough can be said for preventing under body flow.I'm still re-testing on the T-100, as the numbers since the addition of the airdam were so weird.

800 miles later not bad for cardboard and duct tape

Gasoline Fumes -- That's apparently quite effective. What was the previous air dam like? The hood and fender gaps are tightened up in the later picture. Did that and the tire deflectors get you to 70mpg?

What kind of paint under the PlastiDip and why?

It was just some black paint i had on hand to paint what was originally white rain gutter. I painted over it with plasti-dip when I was doing a lot of the trim in plasti-dip and wanted the exact same black hue and texture all around.

freebeard 04-06-2014 02:38 AM

I like PlastiDip.

My guess is that most of the air was still getting under the car.

Those gaps are just because the bumper wasn't bolted on yet.

Partial upper block, lower block, air dam.

Older style mirrors. Only swapped because one was broken and I need to get it inspected.

Just realized I have no pic of my air dam. Just imagine the first pic with a piece of gutter guard.

This was Version 2 of my grille block. Duct tape over cardboard for testing purposes. Survived 2 months of rain, then ended up getting soaked. V 3 will be coroplast and will happen soon!

Emre2blue, nice diffusers.

Why did you narrow the channels of them?

Mine's always connected. I don't see how it would be shorting out.

I'll try that then. The strange thing is that the Ex power outlet only works when the key is on, so the solar charger can't be used when it's off.

Same with mine. I connected the solar panel to the always hot dome light power wire. And I used a barrel plug so I can use the panel to top off my jump starter box as well.

Actually, don't know, I did it by my self, I thought dimensions are good to do the job. And it did actually :p . I wish I could take a picture of the rear window when it rains while I was driving. Water goes like eight straight line from top to bottom of the window. and cuts a little 0,2lt/100 km, from the consumption. Maybe if I tweak it, it would cut more than 0,2lt/100 km, If I had a chance I would do it with 3d printer. and polish it. Current ones are stainless steel, like knife.

The vanes on diffusers are used to straighten airflow amd are generally longitudinal. Vortex generators—what I would call this example—are canted to ... generate vortexes. Which [apparently] can be helpful for reattaching airflow to a surface if they are mounted upstream from the point of separation.

Have you tried placing them on the top of the glass? That's where they would need to be on my car because separation starts about the midddle of the backlight.

I started looking for a different tire deflector material after I hit my left one on a curb yesterday. The carnage wasn't total, but it did tear things up a bit. I'll have to get some of the baler belting. I like the fact it's stiff yet flexible. Might also have to try that for side skirt material.

[edit] took a picture of the fairing. Yellow line is the part that broke off. Red circle is a metal screw that it pulled away from. The fairing also twisted about 90* after I hit the curb, and then backed away. Fortunately, I was able to turn it back and retighten the attach bolt.
As I was musing on this today, it occurred to me I could get some rubber wall border and use that as the bottom 3" which would keep the bottom flexible while still deflecting airflow around the tires...

spacemanspif 11-12-2014 01:17 PM

This thread has me interested in splitters now. Need to do more reading and then build one. Friend has a whole bunch of plywood laying around from a shed he's tearing down. I think I need to grab a couple of sheets and start playing around...

Here is my "stealth" upper grill block. Coroplast from behind, glued/sealed using caulk;

I was thinking about the same thing, except all the border material I've looked at is rather flimsy. Spent quite a bit of time at the big box hardware stores looking, actually.

Sometime soon, I'm going to contact a local semi truck trailer outfitter, and see how much the rubber skirting they put on the bottom of trailer wings would run me... You know, scrap pieces. I think that would have the rigidity needed. Probably out of my price range, but, you know, it's a thought.
