Ley T6 by Jaray: Information & Photos
There seems to be very little information about this 1923 Jaray streamliner. The first car with covered headlights, a four seater and an airfoil on wheels, I figure it's a good thing to study. This thread is intended to bring together whatever information there is on the Ley T6 and similar cars into one place.
First, some specs. Ley T6 Engine: 1530cc, 4 cyl, 20hp Top Speed: 100kph ("while it brought a conventional car motorized equivalent on 70 to 75 km/h") Fuel economy improved 30% source Audi 14/50hp Body: Aluminum on wood frame Source Dixi 6/24hp G7 Displacement: 1596cc Top Speed: 100kph Source Blueprint http://files.homepagemodules.de/b707...8983189n14.jpg source Photos http://www.shorey.net/Auto/Miscellan...t%20wheel).jpg http://www.shorey.net/Auto/Miscellan...0jaray%201.jpg http://www.shorey.net/Auto/Miscellan...0jaray%202.jpg source http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2785/...0e897e39_z.jpg 1923 Jaray Auto 1 by kitchener.lord, on Flickr http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2645/...cc6ff25e_z.jpg 1923 Jaray Auto 2 by kitchener.lord, on Flickr http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2442/...6a794d2b_z.jpg 1923 Jaray Autos by kitchener.lord, on Flickr http://files.homepagemodules.de/b707...p8909623n2.jpg source I recall reading somewhere that it was susceptible to crosswinds. Very similar were Jaray's prototypes using Audi and Dixi cars. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3069/...c06c4ece_z.jpg 1923 Jaray-Audi 2 by kitchener.lord, on Flickr http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3144/...a28d5c6a_z.jpg 1923 Jaray Audi 1 by kitchener.lord, on Flickr http://files.homepagemodules.de/b707...p8909623n1.jpg Patent PDF source http://files.homepagemodules.de/b707...p9932437n2.jpg http://files.homepagemodules.de/b707...p9932437n1.jpg There was also a site I found earlier with a lot of specs, but I can't seem to find it again. Anyway, enjoy! And if you have anything to add please do. Let's try to spread the knowledge about these forward-thinking cars :) |
A tall vehicle with a narrow track. I'd bet it was suseptible to crosswinds.

Very interesting pictures and drawings. Thank you!

I stumbled across this article today, includes many detailed photos - good documentation.
Audi Jaray prototype Text: Keith Adams / Photos: Matthew Howell Audi Jaray 'Ugly Duckling' prototype http://photos.classicandperformancec...o_559522_7.jpg http://www.classicandperformancecar...._559504_12.jpghttp://www.classicandperformancecar...._559498_12.jpg |
The car is from Jaray's two body period. On can see that the greenhouse is purched on top of a sort or airfoil shape in profile view. The greenhouse is blunt oval in plan view and therefore, standing alone, a decent aero shape. Someone pointed out the abrupt transition between the two shapes causes turbulence but I don't remember where I read that, perhaps Hucho.
It is a very interesting early attempt. |
