lots of stops in the country
just wondering, I live about 5 miles from the city and it is all 50 mph limit, and every block along the way has stop signs posted, maybe a 1.5 to 2 miles apart. it's worth getting to 80 to get peak mpg but not sure if it's worth the rush to get there.
If I accelerate slow, I'll get to the next stop before I get up to speed and i dont want ot hammer it to get going, I was going to instal a vacuum gauge and maybe accelerate as fast as the vac gauge dictates. i can only run som many stop signs any advice? |
Instrumentation is a good bet. If you are using a manual Pulse and glide to a stop may be the most efficient fuel wise way to tackle the stop signs. you have to weigh it against increased time to cover the distance and annoyance to other drivers.
Any better route? |
second the instrumentation.
Once you can see "into" the engine you can figure out the best acel rate that has you gliding to the stop with ease. depending on how clear you can see the intersections - you may be able to bump start as you coast to the stop to avoid the starter. |
How in the world do you think going 80 mph is going to get you peak mpg? Going 80 probably uses four times the gas you use to go 50.

If you check his location, you'll note that he's in Canada, so 80 is kilometers, not miles. 80 kilometers per hour equals 50 miles per hour.

I figured since he started by discussing the 50 mph speed limit and a 5 mile commute, he would be consistent, so the 80 refers to 80 mph. The other thing is it's no problem to accelerate to 50 mph and coast back down to a stop in 1.5-2 miles. It's not so easy accelerating to 80 and coasting back down within 1.5 miles. Agreed, he could have switched between mph and kph, though.
For a 5 mile drive, I'd bicycle. If I drove it, I'd conserve momentum, and try to reach each stop rolling less than 10 mph if driving a manual, and <20 mph if driving an automatic. |
That would be Hwy 80 That's a 10-4 good buddy.

lol. We should agree on a common language to use on this forum ;).

My bad I meant to use all imperial for ease and I subconsciuosly reverted back to metric

If nobody is behind then pulse as little as you need.
