93 Civic VX PCV catch can results are in !!!

I installed a PCV catch can on 11 March '11 and emptied it 20 Apr '11 ( approx 6 weeks & 1430 miles ).

It had about an inch of yuk in it ! ( pic attached - white piece of paper behind catch can to show detail... )

I noticed NO mpg gain with the device installed.

Based on what it PREVENTED from entering my engine, I'd still say it's worth the $15 it cost to install it.

Just my 2 cents worth...

I have one just about like that...I also have 2 different Condensators that were given to me.

I don't leave the filter part in mine...due to the chance...espec in cold weather that the filter will stop flowing totally. The vanes and so forth seem to still do the job. In winter you will see a lot of water/ice buildup.

I live on the central east coast of FL ( by Kennedy Space Center / Cape Canaveral AFS, so the freezing issue is not a concern - usually !

I had contemplated removing the filter, as I had read a number of posts about doing that, but I wanted to see if leaving it in would have any negative affect. As far as I can tell, in my application, it doesn't hinder the catch cans ability to do it's job - BARRING it gets emptied prior to it splashing up onto the filter and possibly being "pulled" thru the output side.
I only allowed it to get up about an inch prior to emptying it to prevent this...

A guy at work who has an '91 CRX SI has now implemented one and is pleased with the crud removal !

About to install one on my 2004 Tahoe as well, then my 5.0 Mustang...
Can't hurt !!!!

Decided to check the PCV Catch Can today for grins...
Was sorta surprised as to the amount of crud in it so soon !!
Last change was at 1430 miles. This one is at 876 miles.
There was no oil on the filter element, so that is good !
If you look closely enough, you can see the "tick" mark where I marked the glass last change. This change was quite a few miles sooner than the previous one, yet the amount of the catch was fairly close to the last time ! Will have to keep closer tabs on it to see what the catch rate is i.e. check it every 5 days - see if it's linear...

I change the PCV catch can every 30 days - typically the 1st of every month. There is consistently about 1" of yuk in it.

I'm getting ready to do this to my vx. However yours is so small... no pun intended. I've found 750 mL ones with all the tubing, fittings, brackets and hardware on eBay for a total of 18$. Anything special I should look for?

Wait is this installed on the actual pcv valve area under the intake manifold or in between the hose coming from the valve cover to the intake tube? I now believe its the later, but its confusing that there is a pcv under he IM too... weird

The Ebay item you posted is a pretty nice set-up, aluminum & inexpensive too !!
The only advantage I see to it, with it's larger volume capacity, would be the length of time you could go between draining. Which would be nice too !

I drain mine once a month, usually the 30th of every month.
It will consistently have about 1" of "stuff" in it, thinner than normal dirty oil viscosity...
There's nothing "special" to look for really, you connect a hose to the port on the upper intake area ( the round tube portion that the throttle body is on - throttle body is at the passenger side end & the port for the pcv is towards the other end. There is also a small vacuum line right next to it ). You connect the other end of that hose to the input of your catch can, then run another piece of hose from the output of the catch can to the actual pcv valve barb.
My catch can hangs fairly securely without it being physically mounted.

I'll definitely email you. I understand how to install I believe. I'm just confused because I thought the real pcv valve was under the intake manifold...

After failing emissions test for high CO and NoX, I added an air/oil separator to my Toyota MR2 with success. I first tuned it, plugs, wires, air filter oil change, it failed. Ran codes that pointed toward bad O2 sensor. New O2 sensors, failed. Borrowed a known good cat, still failed. I had been burning some oil for quite a while, but I didn't want to rebuild it at that time. I put my old cat back on, added a CARB legal high flow PCV valve and ginned up an air/oil separator with parts from Harbor Freight, passed. The car gets better mpg and runs on 87 octane again, as well. Still needs a rebuild, the 2000-2003 MR2's were known for their oil control rings wearing out prematurely, but I bought myself some time.
