Lurker with a new ride!
 

Hi all!
I am a longtime lurker,but I thought I should introduce
my shelf since I got a new(to me) car.
It is a Toyota yaris and the first ride showed 43 mpg(US).
Each is a bit better than the 38mpg I was get from my beloved and entertaining BMW.

Any way,its pleasure to read you,I have learned a lot from this forum.

The Yaris is what I refer to as a Personal Mobility Pod. If all you have to move is yourself and maybe a passenger from time to time, it's plenty of car and easy to live with. Those littlest Toyotas respond really well to hypermiling techniques.

43 MPG is better than even the brand new ones. According to your profile you're in Greece, is that correct? What kind of driving are you doing?

After half of a tank,mpg is 48mpg us gallon as board computer indicates! That's cool.. I hope I can keep that all year around but doubt it with( UK winter).

And yes,it is a 1.3l,4 door(luckily) with 50k miles,
I don't know how the USA yaris is geared but I wish my 1.3 had a 6th overdrive gear.
I would also appreciate if the boot was a bit bigger in order to fit the bicycle easier.

I am from Greece but I live in the UK at the moment.I drive mostly in the country roads, (with no heavy traffic during my time of commute).+ I ride the bicycle to work which is a plus mpg wise

The BMW had the 1.8l 8valve fuel injection petrol engine,loved the car although it needed rear tyres every 6 months. I was achieving 38mpg with 50%highway doing 55mph,25% country roads(thus the tyre wear)and 25% city

A quick update,
I borrowed same tools and did a small service the other day,
old plugs had an excessive gap, so I guess they were the original ones, from the factory..
Old air filter was the worst I have ever seen..
The oil was really black and kinda thick and I am really glad I change it.
This might also will boost my mpg as well.

It's time to shop around for my own tools.

Nice job, hey. The plugs and filter replace will certainly help engine function immediately. It might help FE too. Might not be perceptible, but you had to do that stuff, of course.

You could just get tools on a need basis... start with a ratchet an a small set of heads covering the common sizes on your Toyota. The most common will be 10mm-17mm, but sometimes an 8mm and a 19mm. Buying piecmeal is not the cheapest in the end, but it makes the smallest dent in a tight monthly budget.

Cool! I had a Toyota Echo, which outside of North America was the first generation Yaris. They are efficient little rides. I don't know about the newer models, but I really liked the packaging, it carried a lot of stuff for a little car. Enjoy it!

Yes Cali/civic, I already bought the oil filter wrench and borrowed the rest of the tools just to figure out what I will need to buy.
I believe a spark plug wrench, and a set of 1/2" & 1/4" socket sets would be good to have, plus, I will need to change the alt. belt at some point :o
The good thing is that the previous owner had changed the disks and pads two months ago,
and I don't plan to wear them out soon.. (thanks guys for teaching me ecomoddriving.. :D)


Jcp thanks, yea yaris's are cool and roomy, its the third yaris within jimhs family!
I hope it is roomy enough to fit my roadie, in a easy, in and out, way. it will be a big plus when I am driving downtown.

In the last 60 miles of my leisure commute,
the on board computer showed 52mpg.

This commute was in almost ideal conditions( steady between 40-50mph for 90% of the trip).I can't reach higher than that unless I apply hardcore ecodriving technics(like eoc)or modding the car(grill block,aero mods,deleting a\c) which i doubt I will except of the grill block

What's your opinion in that? Should I try harder adjusting the nut behind the wheel?

The last half-tank reached a pessimistic 49mpg(us)!
But could easily drive another 10 miles or so!!
The onboard computer is +10% more optimistic, it showed 54mpg.[LIST]
Average speed was 19mph
Half of the commutes were with lights on
15% of the commute in a car repellent UK city
So far so good

Hello,
I found a new route to work which is a mile shorter and allows me to drive slower.
The last tank resulted to 54mpg.

The mods I have done are a lower full grille block and a few psi more on the tyres.
I don't think I can increase my mpg unless I eoc in every single glide,which I don't.
I eoc only when I glide for more than 0.5 mile or more.

I started a fuel log for over a year now as a way to monitor my progress to the 50mpg goal.
Despite having a pretty standard commute every day it is difficult to spot a trend between winter and summer mpg or the start of using E10 fuel.
I have done mild eco mods which definitely worked but 99% of the mpg gains are achieved because of the lower target speed and by learning how to drive smart( thanks to this community)
The goal of 50lifetime mpg is difficult to achieve but yet again I am averaging 20 to 30% over official figures.
Next step is to try underbody aero mods.

That's where you'll find the low-hanging fruit. :)
