magnetic oil filters
ive seen a few things about improving an oil filter by placing a magnet inside the filter to collect metal shavings and the sort. what is everyones thoughts on this?

My oil drain plug has a magnet that is sometimes worth cleaning. One in the filter might get smaller particles out of suspension.
|
how strong of a magnet do you think would be good. kinda of curious as magnets are pretty cheap
|
Yes it will help, your rings and sleeves are ferris metal, along with your roller bearings, but the bushings are all brass and bronze, some lead alloys as well so you still need to change your filter and use one that picks up small particals, also a bit of the grit in oil is dust from the air that has passed your air filter.

A strong magnet with a sq inch of surface should be fine. I found one stuck to my auto trans oil pan. External applications probably work, too, through thin steel.
|
probably not a big increase in mpg if any but still would collect more contaminants from your oil. makes me wonder about fuel filter and radiator

I just got a magnetic oil drain plug from here : Magnetic Oil Drain Plug I also have a hard disk magnet on the oil filter. But I don't do it for MPG. I do it for (cross my fingers) old-car engine health. CarloSW2 |
