In the market for a $5,000 (or under eco ride)
My scion xb is starting to get a little old 212,000. It's been a good car still getting ~35mpg without any effort but I am looking for something else. Any recommendations? Looks like some of the newer cars a little out of my price range...
So I am thinking: Prius II Another Xb maybe an Xa Civic Fiesta Saturn SL Obviously I would prefer a stick but, would get automatic in a pinch. It needs to have st least 4 seats. It would be nice if it could fit a bike in the back too. Looking for something by the end of February. Thanks! (my first time on the forum in a while) |

I'd stay away from the Aveo. I had one for a year and... eh its just... I honestly think the Metro is a better vehicle.
I'd add Cobalt XFE to the list. Almost nabbed me one of those a few weeks ago for well under $5k. I even found one in your CL and in your price range. 2009 Chevy Cobalt LT XFE You can probably add Toyota cars to the list, echo, corolla, matrix. Not sure you'll find a Yaris for under $5k. This looks like a pretty good deal, quite low miles and very reasonable price. 2002 Toyota Echo for Sale |
Thanks! I just spotted that Cobalt! The xfe should do good on the highway.
Yeah my parents had an Aveo I wasn't too impressed either! ha You can look at the Pittsburgh craigslist too. It's not that far away. I am checking both. I would prefer WV that way registration is easier. |
Craigslist has good filters. I just set max price and manual transmission, then see what's out there. I'm partial to the Civic listings.

Honda civic vx/cx/hx/insight are all good choices, although I wouldn't recommend an insight if you have emmisions testing in your area.
Metro is a good choice Older saturns. There are options. For 5k you could get a good condition insight with a good IMA pack, and get 65mpg at 70mph no problem. But can you stomach the 2k for a replacement IMA when it goes out? The VX you can probably get about 48ish at 70mph, cheap to maintain, parts are literally everywhere. For 5k you could probably buy two, lol. |
Why not keep your Toyo? They are good for 300k miles at least.

Saw a Scion XB today on local craigslist for $2200. Odometer reading 320k miles. Just keep what you have unless there is a big problem of which I am not aware.
