Mazda i-ELOOP, potential use in retrofits?
 
For those not familiar with this technology, Mazda kindof hybridized the Mazda 3 and 6 back in 2014. Those cars have a variable voltage alternator (up to 25v), a supercapacitor bank, a DC-DC converter, and a special battery which I'm going to guess charges more efficiently. With these parts, Mazda was able to have a very basic regenerating braking system.

Best info I've been able to find claims the caps can hold 25kj. Someone check my math, but I estimate a 3000F 2.7v capacitor holds about 30k joules. Adding more caps in series increases their voltage while reducing capacitance, so chances are good these caps are effectively 10x 2.7v 3000F caps in series.

Thinking about it today, I'm sure there are tons of 3's and 6's in junkyards. I wouldn't know what to do with the alternator, but this might be a cheap source of capacitors. Shipping them is likely not an option as Mazda claims they may leak if turned upside down.

Anyone want to raid a junkyard and find out?

2.7v 3000f has maxwell written all over it.

And they should not leak when upside down otherwise the electrolyte would evaporate. (In my opinion).

you can build your own for less i doubt it's 3k f caps it's probably 350F caps

based on the size 3000f are huge about the size of a soda can and those look like D cell size =350f

if you want em and build your own on a balance board .. I don't know this seller or ever bought from this person it's just something I came across a while back when i was looking into building a capacitor bank.. but i found a better option that meets my needs better.(store bought one) i don't want to disclose where i got mine from due to the fact it may cause the price to sharply rise and i still want to get a few more sets to build a capacitor bank

you can bet that video will blow up in numbers the retail price of a capacitor mini bank is 1100$ and this one is stupid cheap for genuine cells (can't disclose the brand yet but it's a good one though) and the one i know about is only 3 cents per Farad :eek: so you can get 6000 Farad for 160$ or so
these are used cells, lightly used that is..

I already have tons of super capacitors, and I love them!

The math doesn't add up for them being 350F. I mean, maybe for the whole bank but if you have caps in series you have to divide the farads by the total number of caps. 6x 350's is less than 60 farads, wouldn't do much of anything.

10x2.7v caps=25v(27v gotta have a buffer) high and 2 caps wide(parallel )
so 20 caps for 200-250$

Would you try to use the i-ELOOP in your Insight? BTW now it sounds quite interesting to see the viability of retrofitting the entire drivetrain of some Mazda fitted with the i-ELOOP into a Transit Connect...

750F at 25v would mean 2.7v 7500F caps! I'm thinking it's probably 27v / 300F, with 10x 3000F caps in series.

If possible, yes. Otherwise this could be a realible, inexpensive off the shelf way to allow reduction of a lead acid battery by 75% or more. It wouldn't need to handle starting duty. Good weight savings and no cold start issues.

the 25vDC to 12vDC converter might be useful for people who run large dual lithium iron battery..... ieloop is just a middle man for more "potential failure"

but then again it will be useful to steal the parts i.e reg braking ieloop(and DC to DC converter) and alternator and put it in another car to use..
