Military theme for fun ...and function
If other grown men can play army by driving military vehicles such as Hummers in a civilian setting, why can't we have a little fun too ? :D
Imagine a matte finish charcoal grey primer or matte black finish on our cars. This would not only look 'cool' but would hide any ..ahem....imperfections :o . A few rivets and such for that added 'military' look, as well as some stencils. I was inspired by several cars on this site - TomO's VX with its shark mouth paint job, and BlownB10s awesome Sentra come to mind. http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/...t/flynterd.jpg version 1 ( modified photo -digital ) http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/...flyingturd.jpg version 2 ( mixed media ) http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/...flyingterd.jpg I was thinking of how that something like this could be functional. If you notice, the boat-tail has a 'cool' checker pattern on it like an old WWII fighter, but this actually serves a function, since it keeps people from driving into you because you are now highly visible - The orange is fluorescent. As mentioned before, the matte black primer paint job looks 'cool' but also hides imperfections. ( and it's inexpensive and easy to touch up ! The white and yellow checker pattern on the roof of the car serves to reflect heat on the dark car, but also goes with the warplane theme. I think it would be cool to have little stencil decals of an oil rig to symbolize the fuel saved. This would be like the little 'kills' stencils on warplanes. You could put something like "75 MPG" underneath. |

Doooooo ittttttt!!!!!!
|
Jethro, actually, I was thinking of how cool your car would be for something like this.
I have no plans to do this to my car ever since my car developed transmission problems. |
I would have given this car the name " Flying Turd" to lighten up the mood of other drivers
around me. ( Besides, that's what my girlfriend thinks the car resembles. ) |
hey cd, Im up in austin today!!! my daughter lives in north austin reaseach way area.
I live down in Boerne |
You quoted all those pics just to say "nice pics"?!?
Yeah, if anyone does it, it will be perfect for the times. Every time you drive somewhere you can declare war on traffic, pedestrians, wildlife... the possibilities are endless. |
Frank: I fixed it :P
Cd: this... http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/...flyingterd.jpg ...is quite amazing! (Also love the oil well "kills" idea.) How the heck did you make that car image? |
sorry frank lee........i forgot
deleted the post. I like the lotus!! |
Cd... absolutely brilliant! Very nice approach to having a bit of fun with ecomodding... it fits nicely into the aero theme! Great images!
I like the idea of listing the 'kills' on the sides... for me, I'd prefer the 55gal oil drum... every time I save another 55gal of fuel (based on EPA), I'd put another 'drum kill' on the side... so I'd show a running total of fuel saved over the life of the car. I'd have 4 drums on there right now... :D (yes, yes, I know that 55gal of oil does not yield 55gal of fuel, but I think people would 'get it' nevertheless) |
any one want to have fun photo shopping my boat tailed matrix? its silver now so a fighter plane look?

I did quite a sloppy job - especially with the perspective at the rear. The middle image is an actual illustration - acrylic, watercolor, and pencil. As far as the oil pumps, I wanted something that could be 'read' from a distance and understood as being related to oil . I like the idea of oil drums as well . |
I already feel like mine resembles the APC from Aliens.
(Google APC from Aliens.... admin removed lotlinked image due to security / browser warning issue). http://ecomodder.com/forum/emgarage-...8ae920d687.jpg (Or just a crazy persons car) So tempting. Might give me a reason to try a Kamm again. |
FrankenJetta/post apocalyptic. Too cool:thumbup:. I am totally blown away by all those images. Awesome job.
|
I'm liking the ODG with rivets, but to me, the matte black is being overdone lately. Everything from sports cars to rock crawlers are being done all blacked out. It's just too trendy in my opinion.
|
I like version 2 with the shark teeth on the front bumper/grill
|
I agree the flat black has been overdone, but the military green or brown (which of course is flat) might be a little out of the ordinary for a passenger car.
|
If you need evidence of awesomeness, just google search "EG6 tank" and pick your jaw up off the floor.
|
Hey...a side benefit to the rivets...They'd be like a bunch of Vortex Generators!!! I bet they'd add an extra 5-10MPG with all that extra vortex attached flow!

I think the car is just begging for some ( flexible ) rubber gap fillers just above the wheels though. |
Flat black or dark grey is a heat-magnet though.
The silver dope or glossy light grey of pre-WW2 USN would be better suited - and you could use garish colour schemes on them. When Wings of Gold really meant golden (well, yellow) wings ;) |

As far as the EG6 " tank " Civic, that car was also inspirational for me, but I can't for the life of me understand why they went with a shiny finish ! |
Another major source of inspiration was this car here :

CD that is gorgeous. I have been debating doing some P-51-Mustang-like mods on my car. I absolutely love the P-40 face on your drawing.
I was also considering (since my car is white) doing an Aperture Science logo in vinyl on the doors. EDIT: Too bad your car isn't a Toyota. You could call it the "Flying TRD" :D |
Here's a Scion tC that I remember seeing a few years ago. The suspension must be hard as a rock to keep the tires from rubbing the fenders! Not real road-practical, but a cool show car. Lots of rivets, louvered hood, and clear coated bare metal.
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n...e/scion-tc.jpg |
So who has a vinyl cutter for making the oil rigs/drums? One for every 55 gallon saved?
|
The owner of my regular forum does custom vinyl. If you get me a finalized design I can get a price for you. That is, of course, unless you find someone else to do it for you.
|
I love it! I was thinking of gas station fuel pumps with a red circle and line through them, but the barrel is easier to grasp I think--with "OIL" stenciled on the top half and "55" on the bottom. So I hereby steal this idea for MAX.
But I'm not going to go camo--I want to be seen by other drivers. |
Nice; it works well with the boat tail. I have been pondering a new paint scheme for the Probe even though I love the dazzle. Invasion stripes are fascinating to me, and you can get Allied or Axis as well.
In WWII the black and white stripes on Allied planes kept us from shooting down our own kind by mistake. You can see them on anything from P-51's to C-47's and unpowered gliders. This one's a Swiss plane http://www.hyperscale.com/images/bf109e332trumprs_2.jpg But here's ours. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3252/...0db98bfe4e.jpg The Germans used them in a squadron of Bf-109's that guarded the Me262 takeoff/landing strips. The distinctive red and white stripes made sure the jets didn't try to take down their friends. (Search "Platzschutzstaffel") http://www.mission4today.com/uploads...20jv44%201.jpg You will also recognize the yellow/gold stripes on Korean War-era F-86 Sabres. |
I love the pics in the first post!

That got me thinking, and in a long string of Google searches I remembered the Black Widow. My uncle helped me build a model of one about 15 years ago. Really cool color scheme (or lack thereof), and likely easy to convert to an automobile.

Sven, what do you think of digital pattern camo ?

thanks for the Photoshop :) but it will need redoing in a few days beuce I am building a nose cone for it :)

Cd -
Numbers on the FrankenJetta are EPA vs 90 day (45mpg & 71mpg)? |
Quote:
The numbers are random numbers. I slapped these two images together quite sloppily . |
Cd-:thumbup::thumbup: I laughed my a$$ off! I agree with the choice of sides, as(engaging bad German accent mode) Eet ees Chermin. And you even read my mind that I will be installing front wheel kilts as well:D.
|
I'd love to paint a car in digital camo. Some people hate the new army uniform but I love it. I have a full suit in that pattern and I'm not even in the army.
The boattail/kammbacks with fighter jet schemes are great! |
Actually, the whole purpose of this was to make our cars MORE visible, not invisible.
Day-glo stripes and bright yellow on black checkers would help a boattail to get noticed by cell phone drivers. Checkers and flat paint also break up any surface irregularities . If a car was painted in digital camo, it would become a hazard. Already, we drive slower than most everyone, so the last thing we need is to also not be seen. Just look at the belly tank on that F/A18 . It is unrecognizable even sitting still. I agree though that a car would look 'cool' in digital camo, but I want to be seen :-) |
