Mirror Swap - VW Golf MK3 1.9 Turbo Diesel

Hi there fellow modders,

Progress has been slow with this build, mostly due to bad weather and lack of funds.

Today I got a chance to fit my DTM style mirrors to my car. I'm hoping that I will see a gain from the loss of frontal area compared with the large OEM ones, but I will have to wait until my next fill up to find out.

I have attached some pics of the car before and after.

As a side note I don't recommend buying these mirrors from e-bay because they are awful quality and the passenger side will need severe modification to allow me to see where I want to. If you want this kind of kit go to a local tuning shop. That way you can see before you by and return if they don't work. -That said, they were second hand and extremely cheap!

Hopefully I'l have some results soon, from what I have read on this site I am expecting to get + .5 / +1 mpg.

Bonrath, German tuners, were the originators for this design and are produced to a quality standard, not cheap though. DTM style is out of fashion these days so second-hand, as you bagged, are a possibility. The ebay mirrors were probably taken from a LHD mould, which may explain your difficulties experienced with the left one.

Please update if you do find some MPG improvements

Thanks for the info, I'm sure getting the better quality German items will be possible, then making base plates to suit your own car.

I was also thinking that it was a LHD car that the mirrors were made for. After much re-jiggin of the mechanism and filing down of the mirror surround and housing, I can now see the road where the other cars are.
