"Hypermiling" a Viper - Doug DeMuro

Doug is more funny-man than any sort of serious hypermiler, so the results are probably what you are expecting (i.e. not stellar...). But it's an amusing watch nonetheless.

"If you want good gas mileage, do not buy a Dodge Viper..."

I'm curious what someone could get that put some real effort into driving efficiently.

A few years ago Doug put some "ecomods" on a Hummer with the ostensible goal of making less-embarrassing fuel economy numbers, but his "mods" were worse than poor. He wasn't trying, he was only mocking the hypermiling practice and ecomodding techniques, and it showed in everything he did and said.

Yup, that is Doug's style. He makes his living making fun of stuff. He makes fun of the odd quirks on supercars, ridiculous features of luxury vehicles as well as hypermiling here and there. As Darcane said, Doug is about humor and silly car stuff primarily. I watch his youtube channel for fun, not for any serious information, but for entertainment.

We need some critical humor sometimes

Being able to laugh at yourself helps a lot

He did an Insight too. I wouldn't be surprised if youtube put that up on recommended videos. Come to think of it, he did a video on a hummer as well. Maybe he not so secretly like hypermiling.

The only time I kept track of fuel economy, my 2002 GTS returned 21.6mpg on an interstate trip from Illinois to Washington. I wasn't a hypermiler then, just driving normally. The T-56 had a very tall 6th gear, keeping engine RPM at ~1900 at 80mph; slowing down a little would probably reap a couple mpg at least, with lower aerodynamic drag , lower RPM, and increased throttle opening. In the truck, with a slightly larger engine (8.3L vs. 8.0) and the same transmission (taller final drive and taller wheels/tires) but horrible aerodynamic efficiency, the difference between 65mph and 80mph was as much as 4mpg.

Ha! This video is great! Not a how-to... but hey, at least he tried? I doubt any of us could get great MPG out of a stock viper anyways. Would need, at the very minimum, a kill switch to keep that giant engine from eating fuel at idle.
