Aerodynamic moto

I have read the post of the "project 100" and I consider that the price paid for the low rider position doesn't worth the maneuverability lose. There is a lot of space lost and a long distance between axles. CG is too much to the back. It's a personal opinion, I might be wrong, but in order to be constructive I thought to an alternative:

This approach might not improve the aerodynamic at maximum possible, but I think is the most economical way. This might be a beginning for a further development. I hope I will find time to model it in 3D full size.

Let me know your thoughts.

I would like to see a plan view.

I suspect the tail section would have to be slightly longer if coming to a point.

Male shoulders being wider than females (small minority of riders) would also mean the shoulder part might be the longest.

The Vetter has a tail I can get behind.

I see it now. Interesting, but I have a problem with the long tail.
Two problems.
1. Too long then it will combine the disadvantages of a car with the ones of a motorbike.
2. lateral stability. A very large side surface might become dangerous during overtaking trucks for example when the high pressure air in front of the truck will push aside the bike. Side wind might become a big problem.
Thanks for suggestion.

I don't remember if it was that thread or a differant one, but mr Vetter did a whole writeup and extended testing on the very issues you are asking about, search around, and you will find the answers.

Hi Calfianu, reading your opening post about design compromises with the Project 100 vehicle, you would have been very welcome to post your thoughts on the thread. I welcome all opinions, both positive and negative. I like your illustrations and you have shown a stylish option for motorcycle bodywork. I agree with your comment on the Vetter tail, which I think can amplify aero issues.

To address the points you raised about manoeuvrability – the longer wheelbase does have some drawbacks, but it is a personal choice about the pro’s and con’s. I think the benefits in the finished item will support my design decisions, but then only I know how its supposed to turn out. Even then, things turn out differently to my original plan as I modify my ideas with each part I make.

This thread you have started has much merit, and I hope it broadens the knowledge base about motorcycle. I have been preparing a discussion topic thread to be posted in the Aerodynamics forum -
http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...rch-26249.html
- my hope for this thread is that it will form a focus for technical discussions and become a resource for research findings.
