I needed an I beam. So I find this guy in the classifieds selling just what I wanted, a 10 foot S5x10 beam. I get there and I am surprised to see a very clean example of a 92 metro in the driveway.

So while we get the beam I chat with the guy about his metro and he tells me he modified it. I get even more interested and mention I know a couple people who modify metros too. He then proceeds to tell me how it was originally a stick with the 1 liter engine, that he installed the sprint turbo bumpers and skirts, and swapped the drivetrain to the 1.3 with an auto trans.

After that, I explained the people I know do pretty much the opposite. I talked about the metro XFI and a few ecomods, but he really wasn't into that.

What's funny is that I'm sure he thought "why would someone do that" just as I did at some point or another during the conversation, but for totally different reasons.

MPG will always be more interesting to me than MPH.

I agree, after a dozen or so speeding tickets. I prefer to cruise by gas stations, and watch my Hybrid recharge the battery at each stop or coast down a hill.

In my younger years, I owned a 1977 Mercury Capri (the german version) . It had the 2.3L ford 4 cylinder pinto engine. After many modifications, ported heads, 4 BBL holley carb, and headers. It could go as fast as a 6 cylinder, but FE suffered. Car was unreliable as a daily driver.

Amazing how much calmer it is to drive a reliable, fuel efficent car and not have to look out for cops all the time.

Good points... I admit, I still get the panicky 'zing' whenever I see a cop, along with a quick look at the speedo... then realize I'm doing 5 - 10 under the limit... and that's after having driven much slower for about a year & a half... hard habit to break!

...anybody remember the old Q&A saying:

Q: What's the difference between an honest person and a thief?

A: The thief got caught...and convicted!
