I will be watching the reveal tonight at 8:30PST.

https://www.teslamotors.com/

The Tesla Model ☰ is the raison d'être for their existence - everything they have done up until now - was done so they could build the Model ☰.

redpoint5 03-31-2016 02:46 PM

Holy cow, it's here already?

I mean, I've been waiting forever, but I figured I would have to continue waiting forever.

Hopefully the car turns out to be reliable. It seems there are many quality issues with the current Tesla offerings. A shame for such an expensive and highly engineered vehicle.

redpoint5 04-01-2016 12:16 AM

Just saw the reveal.

Base model is $35k
Autopilot on all models
215 miles minimum range
5-star safety rating
0-60 MPH in 6 seconds

I'm wondering if the $35k price is before or after the $7,500 tax credit. Tesla is notorious for quoting pre-tax prices.

The car looks great, but I don't care for the hidden door handles. It's just one more expense and thing to go wrong.

P3T3R5ON 04-01-2016 11:46 AM

$35K is starting from Tesla
There are however limited tax credits, so some people who bought last night might not actually get one. The tax credit is based on the dealer not the purchaser.

Hands down: Model 3 > Bolt

No, but the hype machine is. The actual vehicle will arrive over a year from now. That's almost as bad as the so-called election 'cycle'.

I sure hope they're going to stick a grille on that front end. It looks like Neo in the Matrix when they delete his mouth.

Okay, okay. I'm intruiged. Really intruiged. But I'm from Missouri.

Daox 04-01-2016 12:55 PM

I gotta say I kinda like the no grill look.

Xist 04-01-2016 12:56 PM

Well, if Tesla does not offer a fake grill, others will, but it would be nice if this helped reverse the trend of over-emphasized grills.

AntiochOG 04-01-2016 01:03 PM

I watched last night and I think it looks amazing. I'm glad they embraced the no grill thing. I hate how so many cars have giant grills, but they are mostly just black plastic grill blocks.

jamesqf 04-01-2016 01:21 PM

I don't know, but I think Tesla lost the message on this one. From news reports, it "boasts a roof area with a continuous pane of glass". It's supposed to be an electric car, guys, not an effing solar cooker on wheels!

yeah, those stupid electric/automotive engineers.......putting that clear non-reflective, non-blacked, non-tinited glass in........
oh, they DIDNT do that...:rolleyes::cool::thumbup:

review of the model S 'glass' roof:

"Although I don’t often drive with a sunroof open, I’ve always been a big fan of having one in car. Sunroofs seem to open up the cabin space to make it feel less enclosed.

Design
Tesla claims it blocks 98% of ultraviolet light and 81% of solar heat.

I love sunroofs, but my wife hates them. It’s always a discussion point when I’m buying a car. If it’s for me I get the sunroof, but if it’s for her we try not to. If she gets a car with a sunroof for some reason (“loaded” ones that have everything on them) then she pulls the shade over it to pretend it doesn’t exist. She dislikes the glare of the sun on her and the feeling of openness. Knowing this, I expected her to have dissatisfaction with the Model S panoramic sunroof since it does not include a pullover shade, but surprisingly she has never complained about it.

The reality is that the sunroof is so dark and so great at blocking out light that it meets my needs (more room, some outside light, openness) as well as my wife’s needs of having no glare. This is the first car I’ve owned where we’re both happy with the sunroof."

Why The Tesla Model 3 Will Succeed In The End

Quote:

The Chevrolet Bolt. The Hyundai Ioniq. Even the Nissan Leaf. All of these will be remembered as oddball electric also-rans, while the Tesla Model 3 will be remembered as the car that brought electricity to the masses. And the reason why is actually very simple.

...

Tesla, bafflingly, seems to be the only company that understands this. When I’ve asked various Hyundai and GM representatives whether or not their cars will be capable of fast charging, I get an enthusiastic affirmative response. But when I ask whether or not those companies plan on either making their cars compatible with Tesla’s Supercharging network, or building their own fast-charging network to enable true freedom of movement, I get confused, befuddled looks.
This Is The Tesla Model 3's Biggest Design Fail

Quote:

The Model 3 has one huge design flaw, and it’s on the other side of the car.

That flaw? The trunk.

NeilBlanchard 04-01-2016 10:56 PM

All Model ☰ have a Supercharger port - that is key. And the Gigafactory is the biggest building footprint in the world - and it will produce more lithium batteries than all other factories COMBINED.

My only issue is that the Model ☰ is not a hatchback. But maybe if the rear seats fold down, it will be good enough for practical use.

Saw a video saying the biggest 'flaw' was the trunk. didn't see if the seat folded or not.
Cant imagine them NOT folding down in the yr 2016. That is almost an expected/standard feature!

Why would you want it to feel less enclosed? I mean, that's the whole point of pretty much every car since horseless carriages with tiller steering. If you want open, you buy a convertible or motorcycle.

Maybe their designers need to spend some time outside the foggy Bay Area? In the Central Valley, cutting out 81% of solar heat is just the difference between steamed rice and deep frying.

Oh, and did anyone wonder what happens to all that glass in a collision, or a rollover? If it's the same tempered glass used for hatch lids, a minor bump causes it to instantaneously disintegrate into pea-sized bits.

Xist 04-02-2016 02:35 PM

Hopefully they laminate it like windshields.

That's what it reminded me of as well. I think it would look better with the lower grille removed and a grille placed on the upper part. Lack of hatchback is disappointing, too.

Now let's get cranking them and Bolts out so I can buy a used one for $10k in a few years.:D

Big opportunity for perforated vinyl wraps of Confederate battle flags and Union Jacks.

So what is the drag coefficient ? I'm seeing a goal of .20, but that rear window angle is might steep !

If only they flattened it more, kind of like the CRX, Insight, and Prius, and allowed more cargo space...

Maybe they did write it.......guess you didn't get the golden invitation.....

You where very close !

Tesla aiming only 0.21 !!!

How they can have gone from a already small 0.24 on the S model to 0.21 ?

They don't use rear camera, dont have rear whell skirt, don't even have pizza pans !

NeilBlanchard 04-04-2016 01:15 PM

They do have aero wheels:

Many more details: Tesla Model 3 Tweet Storm By Musk Reveals Tons Of New Details

botsapper 04-04-2016 02:18 PM

Tesla's Model 3, probably the fastest and largest 'crowdfunding' project EVA...$10 Billion in 36 hours...speculation of 500K orders!

Existing Tesla production facilities and capacities were expecting only a 1/4 - 1/2 of the pre-ordered Model 3s. The sales of Model S and even the new Model X are expected to be affected and production deliveries will even be made slower, some could be waiting till 2019-2020! Expect new Tesla production facilities/partners.

The long years but refundable $1K 'wait' might be an opportunity for other EV manufacturers to fill the need for 'newer' no-waiting and state-of-the-art models.

Design inspirations

The new 'faceless' Tesla Model 3 looked for a design solution for their grill-less nose. Tesla designers saw a unique and elegant design of the Renault Caravelle or Floride, a RWD rear-engined sports car. Ghia Design and Pietro Frua took credit for the concept but many also saw their real clean-front inspiration, the Amphicar!

Elon Musk has been moved by critiques, they are tweaking the front and will have a new nose design.

It needs a double row of stainless steel teeth in the lower grille.

"We don't need no stinking orders! Your 2016 car will be old by the time you get it in 2019-2020" says Bolt EV.

freebeard 04-05-2016 06:04 PM

That picture says it will be worth the wait.

Tesla really know how to do the loft line and daylight opening. The only one I can think of that compares is Aston Martin. Look at the fit of the chrome trim around the side windows and the vertical posts. Not to mention the dark stripe from the grille to mirrors that makes the Bolt look fatter and the unnecessary 'grille-work'.

It makes the Bolt look as old as my Superbeetle.

Wondering if they'll have a Model 3 hatchback version...

redpoint5 04-05-2016 07:56 PM

I'm mostly thrilled by what I'm seeing from Tesla, as long as it lives up to what has been announced so far. My main concern is reliability, as I've heard some issues with the Model S, and Consumer Reports removed it from recommended due to reliability concerns. I really don't need the expense or complexity of the door handles that are motor activated.

Dodge has been doing them reliably on their minivans for years. I'll trust Tesla's version any day.
