In life if you really want to learn or know something you have to spend a lot of time, money and resources on the matter. Usually all of those are needed.

Sometimes it means spending money on things which makes little sense to other people.

In the Model Y there is not much things you can improve aerodynamically, but still there is room to get 20% more range with better wheels and tires.

I am testing my next gen wheels and tires on road and in tire rolling resistance laboratory 500€ per run. You see easily the big improvements on road but the small under 1% changes cannot be seen on road testing. You find 5x 1% improvements you have 5% which you can easily see on road testing. Same goes for wind tunnel testing... There you fine tune the details or verify your findings by independent institute etc. No one believes if I say I get 20% lower consumption...

I don’t know will I make any money myself on my investments of soon closer to 30000€ the findings but I sure hope so. That is just the money spent. Last 3 years spent so many hours I don’t want to count...

10% improvement was achieved summer 2023. Then 15% was the end goal, but now goal post have been moved to 20%. Hoping to get more results from the lab today. Expectations are 1% better in the last measurements.

Process goes:

First you read and learn everything you can on one matter like aerodynamics
Second you test them in your car since 2008
You interpret the results and read and learn some more like Tires and rolling resistance since 2010
You do some more testing and interpret results
You read and learn something other topic like wheel and tire manufacturings
Do more testing since 2023
Repeat the cycle as many times is needed to reach your targets.

Pretty easy and straightforward process it just takes years of expertise on over 20 areas of production and manufacturing to hit the nail so deep it cannot be plugged out. You can try to do it with more engineers like currently 1 million people are trying to make better wheels and tires but it seems they have stuck to certain level. Its what is maximum performance for them physically and mentally.

In the end you can say try to make it better.

Developing next gen wheels and tires which will give 20% more range in Tesla Model Y.

I dont see any test - change aero things - test - change - etc.
Just the testing of aero that stayed the same as it was before..?

There were changes, the video doesn't state them explicitly.

Three (two and a half?) test articles and multiple runs. The baby template was tested with and without the beavertail. Test runs with and without gaps taped over. That hood blister on the T-100 was deleted. Maybe some others.

IIRC, Darko is gone now.

Could you plz expound?
'test articles'
Numbers for the Baby and T-100 would be interesting.

Darko? aerohead's vehicle?

It was the only road trip I made in the Dasher, nine years ago. I might be hazy on the details.

Here's 324 posts on the subject: ecomodder.com: Baby template car for DARKO 2016

The full size Dodge pickup owner is gumby79 (Last Activity: 09-17-2024 04:17 PM).

Oblique mention at ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/91-dodge-airocap-31981.html#post521725

edit:
The numbers you hoped for are here: ecomodder.com: 'template' testing from 2023-07.
