Most (un) aero vehicle you have seen ?
I've seen lots of vehicles that display a complete ignorance of aerodynamics, but yesterday I saw one of these trucks on the highway :
http://www.johnsonweldingworks.com/images/asplundh.jpg The enclosed portion of the truck ( the section behind the cab of the truck ) was mounted open end first. He was literally driving a huge parachute ! On the opposite side of the spectrum, the day before, I saw a truck with a prop from a windmill on the trailer much like the one pictured here. (Probably the best aero the truck will ever have ! ) http://foobert.com/linked/2009/20090...7_DSC_2864.jpg |
I saw a woman driving a Hummer with a fridge in the box on the roof. Probably the highest Cd recorded.

How about this Toyota 4X4 conversion I saw in Peru last Spring?

That first vehicle, the orange truck is not really made for high speed travel, it's a work vehicle! the kind of vehicle that shouldn't get much more then 5,000 miles per year on it, it's kind of like saying "those garbage trucks sure need some streamlining" , least aerodynamic vehicle I've seen? a classic style Jeep with a lift kit, pretty much any lift kit, stubby body with lots of angles, loose top square rear end, rough shaped under body.

I've got you beat : I saw a guy with a camper much like the one in your picture, but it had a 'Dish' network reciever on the side of the truck. On the other side he had an A/C unit and several other protrusions. I didn't have a camera ( Murphys Law ) I was tempted to leave a note on his truck explaining that he would get better mileage with the protrusions at the rear of the camper and in the wake. :) |
Maybe thread should say, "That is supposed to travel at highway speeds"

they need to apply caulk and pizza pans!

According to our Wiki, the most un-aero daily driver you see every day is the 2002-08 Dodge Ram pickup, which has the same CdA as three Honda Civics. I'd be embarrassed to use a truck of that size to transport just one person.
Edit: come to think of it, the worst aero I've ever seen on the highway probably belonged to the US Army, with something like this: http://www.freedomsphoenix.com/Uploa...US_Army_05.jpg |
You'd sure think RV manufacturers would have a clue regarding aero... but evidently most of them don't.
I had to laugh at an RV I happened to notice the other day... all the leading edges: square as can be. Actually, all the edges on the whole thing- front, top, and rear were all square as could be. BUT the rockers had nice huge radii! The one set of edges (besides the rear) that ought to be sharp, weren't. Go figure. And then there is all the **** glommed on to them: ladders, awnings, roof mount a/c units, multiple a/c units, racks, antennae... you name it, it's hangin' out there. |
I used to have a 71 vw bus that would get 30 mpg at 45mph and 15 mpg at 65 mph. On several occasions it was lifted onto 2 wheels by a strong crosswind. Scary and unreliable, but fun.

Nope, I don't believe that for a second.

That is the most common square left in my locale. The jeep jacked. Even the v8. But there is a trick learned locally, as no v8 is aloud to be manly oem...the bigger tires and a simple air intake, increases fuel mileage, demands torquing, less throttle and rpms, and 4 lo actually has a purpose. while scaring little people... been that way for a LONG TIME. I like that about this place, it is one of the many "backwards" harsh locales that reveal the unlikely truth in a poor environment to boot. Quote:
this bubbly round bus describing the owner or what... Aircooled and 30 years old in 71 would have a bit of unreliable to think about. I bet the same engine running today, ya know, at 60 years old gets the same attention. sOOOOOO unreliable...... |
RVs aren't designed for aerodynamics. They're designed to be cheap to build and roomy inside. So it's easier to staple aluminum to straight 1X4s and have roomy interiors than it is to taper rooflines and have users complaining about unusable space.
Besides, if you've got $100k - $500k for a big RV, filling the tank for $500 isn't a big deal ;). |
I was just marvelling at the mis-application of the generous radius.
And I disagree, at least some RVers would love an fe increase, the bigger the better!!! |
The two daily divers you can find with the worst CdA probably are the International CXT and the F650

I'm not sure why that airplane is shown... it's really streamlined and just because an RV has alot of frontal area doesn't mean it's not aerodynamic, the air flow tends to smooth out over a long straight plane, that is why stubby vehicle like a jeep is on my list and why it can get around the same mileage as a school bus.

That seriously made me laugh.... .................................................. ..... now, drum roll......presenting, the Caterpillar 797...Don't think you can beat this one: . . . . . . . . http://www.strangevehicles.com/image...ent/100806.jpg Oh, and before you ask this thing can get ,fully laden, 0.3 MPG which is actually quite amazing considering the 623 tons of weight (1,375,000 lbs) by analogy, this thing gets over 180MPG per each tone it weighs....now that's ecomodding :turtle::eek::turtle: |

Give me a break, did you not read the reasons I mentioned why RVs suck? No, I meant "brake". |

One such beast can use as much fuel in a day as 1000 average cars on an average commute do.
