Mounting the Scangauge
I have had my SG and GPS in various locations in my car.
http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...NTERIOR012.jpg While this setup worked because I am left-handed, My eyes were having to shift all over to get the various readings. If you are 'using' your SG like I do, you realize that it needs to be at the same eyesight as the other gauges in the car. It also has to be mounted securely so you can tough the buttons to change gauges. I finally have decided to mount the GPS and SG right in the middle. About 4 years ago I had a black acrylic shield made to reduce some of the glare on the center screen. You can see it in this picture. http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v.../parrot001.jpg While I liked having the GPS and SG right there, when I would look at them I would get the light from the uotside and it was tough adjusting. I drive 6-10 hours at a time on some trips and I needed to do something. This week I finished a cover. I used a plastic nootbook that had a grainy surface on it. I built the shape uot of thick poster board, the glued the plastic to that. My experiense has been that plastic will lose it's shape in the heat inside a car. The thick poster board helps resolve that. the edges are trimmed with door edge trim that is available at the auto parts store. http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...carshow002.jpg I didn't use any glue to attach it. I wegde the back edge into the trip along the dash. THe the piece near the steering wheel is folded and wedged into the dash trim. http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...carshow012.jpg I used this setup on a drive to LA last week. It was much more comfortable on the eyes have the dark shield arounf the GPS http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...carshow010.jpg http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...carshow007.jpg |
That looks quite neat, I'm going to have to do something similar and "factory style" to get the SG2 into George a little better than it is just now...
http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-ar...091-inside.jpg Original plan was to build it into the centre console at the top but in this version the sat nav lives there under a pop-up cover. My worry about just mounting it in the middle of the dash is that someone will want to remove it without permission. Where it is just now is slightly hidden behind the A-pillar but it makes it hard to read in sunlight. The traditional place, on top of the steering column, is out because of the closeness of the speedo to the wheel and I prefer it in the line of sight so low down on the dash or on the rear view doesn't work for me. I'm going to try and make some kind of mounting for the top of the dash, maybe in the black correx which I have just now. Thing is with George being so new (newer than I expected) everything has to be "factory" or its not going on... ;) |
I was at the 'plastic' store. there is a way to make a mold of something. I was going to make a mold of the cover over the instruments and the put it over the gps and scangauge. The bmw 7 series has a instument cover and a center cover that are the same. that was what gave me the idea.
But I found the black notebook with the faux cover on it and thought "hey for $2 I'm done." |
aarragonis,
if your any good with fiberglass, you could mount the scangauge onto one of these:http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...0808-00085.jpg You can get them off the internet for $10-14(us) You could paint it to match the dash color..... |
Thanks - its an idea ;) I've moved it since the photo to above the speedo so if you looked in through the window (the angle of the pic) it would be hidden behind the rev counter pod. If I could dissasemble the SG and re-arrange the bits I'm thinking of a second pod for the other side.
The assembly under the speedo has mountings for LHD and RHD - I think... Anyone taken an SG2 apart to see whats inside ? EDIT : Someone with a SMART has done so. They've put it into the headlining though which is not where I want it. http://www.cubefx.com/smart/scangaugefinal.jpg I'm going to visit a car place later, I may see if they have a cheap radio mounting pod I can dremmel & tape to death in experimentation mode this week :D |
go to page 6 of the smart page.....someone opened it.
What I found is that you should live with it in sevral locations. I finally realized that it needs to be up in my line of sight. ANd mounted securely so I can touch it withuot worrying that it will move I could never mount it in the headliner like he did! |
I shall have a play later - had to come into work on my day off to send a file (1/2 hour drive each way, 2 mins in the office and away again...)

Right - had a look around the car spares place in the Audio and Interior bits and bobs sections. Found an audio mount which is almost exactly the right size. Its from an adapter plate for a FIAT to allow a standard DIN head unit to replace the built-in non-standard sized one which fails quite easily. It is even the right colour to match the interior.
I didn't get it. They wanted £16  EDIT - Going to look at a pillar mount like you mentioned and may even strip the SG2 to look inside, unless someone has pics of a disasembled one... |

If you want something clean looking, check out Brodit ProClips - though they won't come cheap either. |
Those are all very interesting installs.
In looking at the Vibe, I decided I wanted something that was functional, but I didn't want it to be a vandal magnet. So, I put it in one of the Vibe's numerous storage compartments; it's a tad lower than I like, but I can read it through the steering wheel without much trouble. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y30...VibeSGHide.png |
He he - the Brodit things are cheaper on Amazon than the "need to be dremmelled" car panel adaptor. Might look at those. There is a grill above the radio in the centre so if they make a horizontal one it could go there in use, and into a small cubby when it needs to be hidden.
EDIT - Brodit looks a goer for me, once I save up... http://www.simplymounts.com/media/brodit/653717-3.jpg and http://www.simplymounts.com/media/brodit/653716-4.jpg In the second example I may be better off going for the LHD version for my RHD car as that empty central pod in the pics contains the SAT NAV in my car which is built in. They have a pillar mount but not specific for my car. This mount would be perfect (804313) in RHD form... http://www.erikbennink.nl/wp-content...t/DSC01149.JPG this one is designed for an Insight. EDIT2 - there are some fabrication options here too. *(dives off to workshop...) |
@Polo - thanks for posting your mount pics, I missed it earlier with my edits. I'm not familiar with the car, is that low down and out of eye line or does it work ok for you ?

Before GPS & ScanGauge.
The little push botton switch right above the A/C vent is for my driving lights. Under the button is a trim piece that hides one of 2 screws that hold the entire center section in place. I had the small shield formed uot of thick black acrylic to provide a small amount of glare reduction on the small Parrot screen (MKi9100 - bluetooth phone/Ipod/mps) BEFORE: http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...nterior009.jpg After: Here is the current setup. I remved the Garmin GPS from it's mount plate. http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v.../mounts001.jpg THe Garmin comes with sevral mounting platforms. I trimmed down the smallest one by cutting off the round base. Then I drilled a hole in the back and used the place where the trim screw was to anchor the GPS. http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...ounts002-1.jpg To make sure that the Scan gauge sat at an angle to the dash, I hand made this bracket from a aftermarket cup holder I bought at walmart for $2. http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...ounts004-1.jpg Here is it sitting in place http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/v...ounts003-1.jpg |

here is another aftermarket mount:
BlendMount Photo Gallery ScanGauge II BSG-1000 Series It'is a little high( abve the mirror) for my taste. |
Found an image of the SG2 opened up...
http://www.verboom.net/images/c1/20090205/panel4.jpg the guy only took the back off but it looks like its all mounted on one board including the display and switches. Makes sense from a cost point of view I suppose but it means seperating it out for remounting is not a goer, for me anyway. The saving up continues... Edit - Linkage. |
here is how I mounted the scangauge & gps in the Kia Sportage. see post #8

here's my hack into the column installation in the beetle.

Always admire a man who will cut into car parts!!

Just take a deep breath and DO IT! :D
I drilled a 5/8" hole in the dash up by the VIN tag for my EGT/boost/temp gauge too. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/x9om8gs7w...u-B69_K5hI8ANa I tend to keep my cars so no big deal, and I could plug that hole and get a new column cover easily. |

bump.
I have now mounted my gps and scangauge in my 2007 KIA SPORTAGE. I thought I had a pic but will post tomorrow. But I basicly bent a thin piece of metal and wedged it between plastic parts. |
Mine is just resting on the column in front of the speedometer in my truck. Seems to be a good spot for now...right next to my Valentine One radar detector remote display. I really should make a real mount...
