MPG experiment!!

Ok I'm trying to see if I can run a jeep with no throttle and just using a ball valve to control the amount of fuel(propane!!!) that goes in the engine. I've tryed it on my jeep already, it worked fine but there was some problems with timing and other things cause it was running rather rough. I'm wondering if there's a distributor that does the timing advance by the rpm's of the motor instead of vacuum or computer(I know some vacuum distributors have a centrifugal timing advance if not all of them). I'm also needing a computer that will run the transmission without the other engine sensors cause they'll be removed also(except for crankshaft sensor of course).

a 4.2l probably has what your looking for in the distributor; i think you have an a518 tranny.

Ok I put a video of my jeep running on propane on YouTube here's the links

Running a car off propane - YouTube

It jumps up to 3600 rpm when I turn the valve on the tank 1/8 of a turn from its idle position of about a 1/4 turn

Cool project!!!

Does your jeep have a EPROM TCU that can be reprogrammed?

Not that I know of but I haven't really looked into that! I tried to figure out how much propane I was using when it was holding 900 rpm and I think it was about 1/4 as much as my BBQ which I found is suppose to run for 20-21 hours so does that mean the jeep should idle for up to 80 hours?? And if so would it also mean that I could get a minimum of 10 hours run time driving down the freeway under power?? If so then if I'm going 80 mph at 10 hours that would be 800 miles on a 4.6 gallon propane tank or 3.40 GGE???

I was asking about your transmission. lol

I should of been more clearer.;) The TCU "transmission control unit"

This is the one I'm using. Automatic Dsm's

It gives you control over shift points, line pressure etc.

If your jeep has a separate computer to run the transmission you should be OK to run with out a ECU.

I believe that's what it's got but I'm not sure!! I'm probably going to have to put the project on hold tell the beginning of next week cause I'm having to use it as my DD tell then. I have everything I need to get it going but the piece I need to replace the throttle plate so that the air free flows, I'm running the engine at WOT so the only thing being controlled is the amount of fuel going in.
