MPG vs l/100km
Lots of people hate "MPG" because it's "useless in the real world"... I think seeing the price at the gas station, which is price per gallon, then thinking 'Hey, my car can go 40 miles for that much! That's two trips to work and back!' is way better than using L/100Km and saying 'Hey, for that much, my car can go... wait I need to divide my L/100km average of 5.89 by 100 then multiply it by the 32 Km I drive to work and back, that means I can go to work and back for the price of gas times 1.88...that's X amount of money, awesome!"

not hard for us. if my car uses 5.89L/100 km and i drive to work 20 km that means i can drive to work 5 times for about $8 (if the fuel is at $1.3 / L)
both systems work, it all depends on what you have been thought and that's probably the easier one for you. |
I know you guys are good at figuring it out, but it's way more work. I know my average and I read the price...it costs me that much to go my average miles with no math or approximation. Still, there's always somebody saying it makes no sense

It allows you to get a really quick good idea of how far you can go for the amount of gasoline you put in.
However, it does no good at all at figuring out how much gas you saved for a given modification. In other words, if two people both save 3 MPG on a given mod, what does that really mean? For me, who gets about 19 or so MPG to begin with, that'd work out to be a savings of 1.7 L / 100km, which would be awesome. For somebody else who gets 75 MPG, that'd work out to a savings of 0.12 L / 100 km, which is slightly above statistical noise. |

What do you do if you improve the mileage of you r car? Do you circle the parking lot until the whole gallon is used up? And what do you do if you have a bad day? Do you drive almost to work and walk the rest of the way? |
We just fill up and drive, then we fill up the next time and divide the miles we drove that tank by the amount of fuel we put in to get our average MPG. If we want to know before the tank is up and we don't have a mpg meter, we just fill back up.
