MPGuino gets me within distance of 55mpg
OK, so I slacked off this winter and didn't log mileage. Well, to get back into things I got the MPGuino installed in my 98 HX and the first tank shows 54.87mpg. I am excited about this because this tank was average weather and average traffic conditions. I believe I can maintain this all the time. The mpg figure was from odometer and gas pump gallons(the same way I have figured all log entries), not from the guino readings. It is still being calibrated so I just use it to know when I can maximize mpgs. Having the instant feed back changed my driving habit a lot. I am excited for the warmer temps to get here. I find myself trying to squeeze out every last bit now to try and raise that trip average.

And once you get the calibration down, it is amazing how accurate the MPGuino can be. My calibration is complete (after a year) and I routinely see my miles traveled are within 1 mile of the odometer after a 400 mile tank (.25%) and the gallons are within less than .1 gallon on a 10 gallon fill (< 1%). Of course the gallons are hard to keep consistent, but I have been using the same pump and technique for a while, so it all evens out in the end.
I also noticed you have been using a correction for the tires you are using, so you can build the correction factor into the calibration of the MPGuino and you don't have to do the math! |
Well, I'll be filling up on the way home tonight. MPGuino is showing the same mpg as last tank, slighlty better. We shall see what the odometer and pump shows. I think I will average the first two tanks and then use that number to correct the microseconds/gallon to calibrate the MPGuino. I still got caught by a lot of bad weather on this tank, the wind has been horrible in Colorado for the last week. That is suppose to let up tomorrow. It is snowing today :(

Nice work. It hit 93 degrees here yesterday. I think it was a record. I was trying for 77+ MPG in the Insight, but got caught in a small traffic jam for about 10 minutes and ended up with 75.9 MPG.
55 in a HX is exceptional, congratulations, especially in cold conditions. regards Mech |
Getting this mpg isn't easy, a lot of coasting and rarely over 50mph even in 60mph zones. I try not to make people mad by driving slow, it usually works out OK. I can make sure when they reach me I am in a good spot so they can overtake me easily.

OK, I got spanked. Time for more research/thought. Guino showed same average for last two tanks at 50mpg, also showed same gallons used at 8 gallons. The first tank took 7 gallons to fill at the pump, the second tank took 9 gallons to fill at the pump. I am not seeing how there can be a 2 gallon difference in the pump. Filling location was flat and I ran the pump half speed. I'll just keep averaging tanks and see if I can figure out the 2 gallon mystery.
