MPGuino for old carburetor subaru

3 Attachment(s)
Hi
I have an old 1984 4WD subaru touring wagon with a carbie. I'm thinking of using these parts to try to get an MPGuino going.
I can't post links as this is my first post here
Arduino Uno
Arduino LCD shield with buttons on ebay intm # 351048408130
Fuel flow sensor Ebay Item # 121334843502
Any thoughts or suggestions
Cheers
I posted this in DIY section but probably belongs here

flow meter pulse output

Hi OldSubi
The Flow meter you mention , if it's a simple pulse output it's not compatable with the MPGuino unless you mod the code to count pulses, instead of pulse width.
I have already tried a modded version of a similar flow meter with the MPGuino ,it was a complete failure.

flow meter

Hi TP Thanks for the info I think. I ordered all the parts yesterday:(
What code did you use? Did you mod the code or the meter?

Cheers

I decided not to mod the MPGuino & attempted to build a injection pulse simulator from some sensors ,it's an on going development program, when time permits.
My Last carburettor vehicle failed last month ,so I need to repair it before more testing can be done ,but otherwise the device looked promising so far.

Hi OldSubi
Do you have a photo of the original factory flow meter ?

According to the eBay page the flowmeter's output equals .46mL per pulse, it shouldn't be too hard to wrangle up a bit of code to do that math.

I say this knowing not one damned thing about the Arduino, but in my head I'm writing the software in BASIC. Compile that input with the pulses from the VSS and you've got real time miles per gallon.

Hi
I don't have a problem with the coding. , it is the problem with the cheap sensors ,
I have tested a number of these & at low flows linearity is non existent if they continue to work at all.
High quality flow meters with sapphire bearings are the way to go, but are several hundreds dollars for a suitable one.

some ideas still floating around for accurate and cost effectiveness,

small reservoir that refills at a certain level to another certain level, keep track of the refills, needs vent and inlet solenoid.

positive displacement pump (dual piston or gearrotor), keep track of revolutions, possibly replace stock fuel pump (or be driven by pump).

Two piezos at opposite ends of hdpe tube to measure flow through the tube (needs basic DSP at fairly high resolution).
