Aircraft that go 500 mph get rated close to the ground flying through marked areas so you can determine when the enter and exit. They will go faster than 500 @ altitude, perhaps even go supersonic at very high altitudes including upwind and down wind. Not because the plane is faster, the speed of sound is lower.
Can use GPS and other systems, but this are generally not considered to be as accurate because the start and end aren't permanently defined. Possibly an anachronism of being earth bound advanced caveman
