Muffler fell off. Fixed it.

I was driving along in my truck yesterday, when I heard a "clunk" and my engine got real loud. I pulled a U-turn, picked my muffler and half my exhaust system off the side of the road, and headed back home by way of the auto parts store. An hour later and $15 worth of auto parts, I had a working exhaust system again. I had a welder and a angle grinder with cut-off wheel, and knew how to use them. I actually had the tools, skills, and experience to fix a car right in a short amount of time and not much money at all. Felt pretty good about that. |
That makes you a "Car Guy" !!!!!
Congrats! |
Nice job! I fixed mine the other day as well. It was being held on by a coat hanger....
I finally had time to remove the coat hanger and install the bracket. I had 1 problem: The original bolt holding the brackets together was roughly 4" long. The bolt my bracket came with was 2" long... I attempted to unscrew the old bolt and the head broke off. Fix: I saw an empty paint bucket, cut off the metal handle, and wrapped that in a few circles where the bolt was supposed to go! Good as new! |
THere really is no better feeling/sound than fixing a exhaust/muffler noise problem.
It's always anoying and usually loud. And usually is easy/cheap to fix. AND sounds SOOO much quiter! |
Way to go.

The passing of time gave you thousands of $ worth of boy-racer loud exhaust for free, and you threw it all away!

One of my favorite exhaust finds was a very nice mandrel bent all welded Tempo system that unfortunately had the cat torched out of it. I bought a 1' section of exhaust pipe for- what- $6? (one end had to be expanded) to weld in, to mate up with my existing cat. That was quite a few years ago and it's still holding up fine.

Thanks guys!
Actually, when I got to the auto parts store, the one clerk was outside just finishing his cigarette-break. So he knew right away what I was at the store for. "Sounds like a Hemi", he said of my truck, sans exhaust system. When I test drove it AFTER the repair, it sounded to me like an import car! I was just glad I was able to do a good/cheap/fast repair! Hey, how often do you get all three!? It's usually pick two! Besides the exhaust, I have a number of other issues with this truck. I'm just trying to keep it going until I can get my "SuperTruck" Hybrid rolling! |
When I use to inspect vehicles back in the 90s all you had to have was the pipe a little futher back than the cab of the truck. You didnt want to see if it improved performance and or fuel economy?
Before I got a friend to weld me up a straight pipe exhaust in place of my muffler on my insight I unbolted the muffler and drove it around a bit. It wasnt that much louder and gave more low end torque, plus a nice deep throaty sound. |
Your muffler didn't just fall off. That was your truck trying to tell you it wants to be an EV! :)
