02' Corolla CE @ 37 mpg, what next? - Fuel Economy, Hypermiling, EcoModding News and Forum

Hi,

I got new tyres for the Corolla and have them inflated to 44PSI. I don't do hypermiling yet but follow some simple tips like driving slower between 60-65 mph and coasting to stop signs and traffic signals. Also use the AC a lot less. I get about 37 MPG of which most is highway driving.

I am wondering what changes can I make to the car to help the MPG. This is an automatic transmission Corolla.

A correction. What ready-made or off-the-shelf items can I buy and add to the car to help mpg?

something simple to try for a weekend is take out the back seat, and passenger seat, and spare and tools and see what the weight reduction does.

I'm doing 42mpg (average) in my 05 rolla, you can do some gril blocks, lighter weight engine oil, and take out the spare and jack and replace em with a can of fix-a-flat or get AAA or some other towing service, i have both.

before taking out the spare check your state's laws.

in maine you have to have a spare and a jack by law. theres heavy fines for not having one if you're sitting on the side of the road

Are you coasting in neutral? If not, try it. You can start coasting much earlier.

FYI, you are hypermiling already. Hypermiling isn't a specific technique, its simply driving for the best fuel economy and achieving it on a regular basis.

search the web...I do believe that there are some lowering springs and such that are avaliable for your car.

lowering springs are available for the 98-02 8th gen corollas. If you get new springs you should get new shocks as well.

its an expensive upgrade, ~500-700 dollars, for minimal MPG gains. although you will be able to take corners faster

I've recently bought a four speed automatic '02 Corolla CE as well. First tank was 37mpg. Changed the oil to Mobil1 5W30 and adjusted the nut behind the wheel a little and my second tank was 41mpg. Mainly, I've just been a little lighter on the accelerator and kept to the speed limit. Mind you, I have a 45 mile commute each way, most of it 55mph rural.
You can check my planned mods, but the ScanGauge is at the top of my list, followed shortly by a grille block (ScanGauge to help monitor temps) and front air dam, some modification to my air intake (looking to eliminate pressure drops). If I go nuts, I'll do some wheel skirts and a belly pan. But I'm going to run August "as-is" and see what I'm averaging.
