Jacked up ignition switch.

I think EOCing the wife's Sonata might have lead to trouble.

It is an '09 Sonata 4 cyl. 5 speed. It starts fine, but, occasionally, quite often actually, in the run position, the starter still trys to engage, resulting in nasty noises and eventually a shot starter/flywheel.

When it does this, the radio cuts out for a few moments, just as if you did turn the key to start. Moving the key a bit one way or the other gets rid of it/causes it. There doesn't really seem to be a spot where it doesn't happen at all.

How difficult is it to remove the switch and inspect/clean/fix it?

I have received advice to just bring it to a locksmith that works with autos.

Not sure about your specific car but it may be only the electrical portion of the ignition swith. The mechanical (lock cylinder) portion is probably fine. If the electrical portion is available separately I would try that first.

Does she have a lot of stuff on the keychain? I have heard of this wearing out the ignition lock and the switch because of the sideways force from the extra weight.

mech, yes, I do believe it is a problem with the electrical portion.

lordherald, not really as much junk as most women's.

i think i may actually be to blame here. the sonata's headlights do not stay on when the key is switched to the ACC position. This makes night time EOCing interesting. I do not have a separate cutoff switch. I have found that if you move the switch between ACC and RUN, it cuts out the ignition, but not the headlights. I am afraid that using this practice of being between positions may have caused arcing. Won't be EOCing this thing at night anymore, not that I drive it a lot anyway.

Anyone know how difficult it is to get this thing out?

Nope.

bumper to bumper ended at 60K. "drivetrain" is pretty damn limited, which is why they extend it out to 100K.
