My new 2002 Insight
Hey everybody this will be the buid thread for my new eco toy. Some of you may know my 91 civic si. I still have her. However, I spun a rod bering and have decided to dedicate it as a Track car for Land speed racing. SCTA class H/GCC for those who are interested.
She has 161k miles, leather, 6 disk cd , 5speed, and I love it! http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psfgcrquyb.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...pssmgvpabq.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1hjgjjr6.jpg |
Lucky you! It looks nice.
Does it have a clean bill of health, or some nagging issues to take care of? Time to start a new garage entry. :) Congrats on the new car. |
im jealous

Storm Chasing and a Insight!!! I'm double jealous!!!
Nice looking car, keep it safe and away from getting hail damage. I love the pics with the mammatus clouds in the background. |
Great pics!
5-speed g1 Insight is a treat to drive for an eco-nerd. You're going to have fun. |
She looks flawless. Also has a clean carfax, 4 year old battery, but seems to want to grind while down shifting into 1st and second.... not sure why (thinking syncros)
The first thing I'm doing is replacing a missing front belly pan. Then save up to rebuild the transmission and lower it (Ground Control). http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9h3syz7p.png |
Congratulation on your purchase!
Like MetroMPG said, you will have a lot of fun hypermiling the Insight. Its the full-game, and really rewards your efforts with incredible mileage! Great pics. Saving them to my Insight pictures folder. :D |
Some results.
Well, I have some results... As it turns out my cars missing front belly pan makes a substantial diffrence. However, I do not have any scientific evedence to quantify the readings of my butt - o - meter.
None the less, after adding my coroplast belly pan reinforced with 1 1/8" aluminum angle "iron" and aluminum flat strap that is rivited so that it sandwiches the coroplast. It also acts as air flow channels much like the roof rails used in land speed cars to stabilize high speed air. (Or at least that's the theory) I also deleted the passenger wiper and the rear wiper. I used the front licence plate as a partial grill block, and removed the blocky (and presumably unaerodynamic) licence mounting bracket. I wanted to get an idea of what this car is capable of, and fortunately , we have a wonderful ~25mile loop with little elevation change. The conditions under which this testing was conducted are as follows. 97-98° f winds from the east 6-10 mph. ~61°f Dewpoint. Speeds varied from 36mph minimum and 67 maximum. (Excluding when I reset the trip meter at the 1 stop light before the test. Average speed of 51 mph The hybrid assist was never used. battery meter started 4 bars from maximum charge and ended at 2 bars from full ( not sure if that is a quantifiable measurement) http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psbkh6uwkf.png http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8w3dnkew.png http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psaktzrprz.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...ps40gmg0kz.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...pskbic8asa.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psbgtcbumw.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psu6k0llj5.jpg |

I posted this , because i felt it needed itd own thread. but here it is for my build thread.
I have had the car for about a month. and it has ~162K miles on it and I have averaged about 54mpg. not bad, just nowhere near what I was hoping for from a 5 speed 02 insight. ON WITH BUSINESS!!! Here is a step by step guide, if anyone needs it. EGR Plate Removal/Cleaning - With Pics - Insight Central: Honda Insight Forum dear lord. one passage was 100% blocked. the other 2 . 85-95% http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psymwwdcpy.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psobrnuaql.jpg This was the gasket.. http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psjr1nnpfs.jpg and a nasty PCV Valve... http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psobrnuaql.jpg Well. I am a little embarrassed... I cant believe how bad it got. MUCH better. http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psuwkicdxd.jpg and yes... this the OLD NASTY gasket. http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...pszfkpaiwb.jpg http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...pshjuanhnr.jpg. Here are the rusults. http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psjr0ojkkm.jpg This is on, a single loop. With a 10-12 mph wind from the south. :turtle: 48-58 mph, ~91F after dark (2am, no traffic) the bright yellow road 289. http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/...psbkh6uwkf.png |
Wow, amazing results! I wish I would of had such luck after cleaning my EGR, now I can't get L/B at all after cleaning mine lol.

I might paint it if there's going to be rain! |
Well, it is funny you mentioned rain. No joke, 30 miles from my mom's house it started raining. There were still 190 miles remaining on the trip. Fortunitly it was light enough it never really got the chance to soak in. The boat tail was horribly ugly and it was nowhere near optimal.. but it made a noticeable diffrence without a doubt. Without good ABA testing i would say easy +6%
I think a tail may be my next modding project. ... The way down to brownwood I averaged 67.2 mpg on the FCD. On the way back to lubbock the average was 71.3. However, I will note that on the last leg of the trip ( a 118 mile north stent) I had sustained head winds over 20 knots. Prior to the turn north I was averaging 76 mpg. The over all speeds varied from 40 to 75 mph.. but the time was within 10 min of each other on both directions. (240 miles each way) |
