My new project :D (rebuilding 1989 Honda CRX HF - considering VX engine swap)

So, I didn't think I should post this anywhere else so here it is:)
This is my new project/new found love.. A 1989 Honda CRX HF. This baby needs A LOT of work. And later on, once bodywork has been completed and I get it running to its fullest capabilities I plan on doing a VX swap into it. Here are just a few photos..

Follow the link: Crx hf - a set on Flickr

So, If any have interior parts (Rear Cargo divider?;)) or really anything that can get this thing lookin' good again let me know:D. I just picked up a new hatch for $75 and I am hoping to get it on around this weekend... Interior needs a MAJOR cleaning also. All rear interior stripped..

Will be updating with progress!

Dunkler 05-27-2011 05:54 PM

Wow man, you have a lot of work in front of you! I would really be impressed if you turned this thing around to a drivable gas sipper!

wyatta4 05-27-2011 06:07 PM

I know.... Lots of work, but I am excited!

honestabe 05-29-2011 09:39 PM

good luck man, you're going to need it

wyatta4 05-29-2011 11:48 PM

Poppin' the back, straightening it out, and putting the hatch on tomorrow! Along with complete interior strip... Except dash.

wyatta4 05-30-2011 10:35 PM

Got the hatch on:D a lot of work... Still not perfect, far from it haha. Will post pics later tonight!

Updated the flickr page..
Here some pics of my progress. the hatch was a beast to got on there.. We may just be welding a new piece of the rear quarter panel on instead of trying to straighten in out anymore.. Going to get the piece today.

Got the bottom pretty straightened out. Still have some wrinkles though.

wyatta4 06-01-2011 12:32 PM

Was up till 215 last night pulling the dash and geting rid of the squeeks and rubbing. Those drive me CRAZY ha.
Kill Switch is my next goal I believe.. Maybe tonight.

Christ 06-01-2011 12:42 PM

Look into fiberglass fender and quarter panels. Someone may still make them.

I have the rear plastic panels for the quarters, if theyre still any good.

wyatta4 06-01-2011 02:08 PM

The little deals that say HF and Honda on them?..
The piece that i am getting, the whole rear quarter panel from the door to the plastic panel, has one on it, however its blank. it doesn't even say Honda on it...
And do you know if any place that makes fiberglass quarter panels? I may have to replace the front two.. front bumper seems to be revive-able..

wyatta4 06-07-2011 01:47 PM

Okey, so since my climate control is broken I have been looking for a replacement. Prices for a stock replacement are ridiculous and that faceplate is just plain ugly..
My idea was either a 1990-93 Accord climate control swap, cons are the knobs break I guess, Pros are it looks good. Link: http://www.used-oem.com/media/07/a20...94792d16_m.JPG

Second idea seems to be a much better option, plus I like the looks of it. I would take the 92 to 95 Civic Climate control and place it into the CRX, cons fit is kind of tight, Pros I am not going to have anything breaking (If I do it right), and these controls are cheap! Here is the guide for that one: EG climate control into CRX - D-series.org

Any suggestions or experience anyone else has had would be helpful. Better ideas are always good too:)

backyard engineer 06-15-2011 10:44 PM

so you like bodywork? does that car run and drive? have you been in any nearby junkyards yet? be sure to search craigslist in your area also. alot of guys strip their crx interiors so I sure you can find that stuff pretty easily, just a matter of time. Glad to see you putting it back on the road. you seem pretty motivated.

myrefugeisintheLord 06-28-2011 11:25 PM

Nice looking car. Looks like a lot of work, but looks like a ton more fun for sure! I'll be watching your progress. : ) Keep up the great work!!

wyatta4 07-01-2011 01:33 PM

Just tried to align it... They said I will need a camber kit to make the left side align correctly. Hmm..

California98Civic 07-01-2011 02:40 PM

Wow. I'm impressed. I'll be watching this progress too. Where did you get such a car? Wow.

wyatta4 07-11-2011 12:27 PM

I got it from a guy who parked it backwards on a hill... the parking break went out i guess;)

Dad is almost done buffing his project out, then we can finally pull mine into the shop. I've been on hold for a while now, just cleaning interior up mainly.. Still stripped, however.

larrybuck 07-11-2011 10:06 PM

It does involve some traveling, but I would suggest that you camp daily on Portland, and Seattle's Craig's Lists.

There are plenty of rust free ones out this way, that as a dead mechanic's special; you could probably find for about $500. or so. Then you would have tons of parts.

This is a beautiful time of year. Combine a trip to the Oregon coast, rent a tow dolly; and you are set!

Appreciate your vigor; press on!!!

wyatta4 08-16-2011 06:02 PM

Got a new hood and Pass side fender. gunna try and get to taking the bumper off tonight!

I would like some input on what kind of armrest I should use for the interior? EG or EK? Done some research and I really dont know what would be best...

Plus, I was considering repainting all interior, keeping it blue of course. But I dont know how well this will work and what color exactly I would use?

And my drivers side panel is torn up.. Am I just going to have to purchase a new one some where?

Any aero mods recommended before I get to painting? I am getting rid of the antenna.. What else... Hmm...

wyatta4 08-16-2011 06:10 PM

Oh, BTW. I got the climate control in, wired, and working. It is the same kind of climate control as out of my 1994 civic ex. I still havent mounted it though cause I dont have a solid interior piece to measure with:P Will post pictures tomorrow!

wyatta4 08-18-2011 01:25 PM

I got everything straightened out up front...

Front End

Was bent up pretty badly..

Headlights..

The rust in these pillars is going to be a .... to get out/patch up!!

Pillar!

And how can I tell if this is a stock HF motor or not?.....

Engine???

88hf 08-19-2011 07:58 PM

d15b6 for the hf printed at the front left of the block next to the transmission. Also if the wiring is unadulterated thats a good sign. Also if you are running an hf ecu that is another give away. Looks like its the hf motor by the injector placement. Doing a really great job by the way.

wyatta4 07-06-2012 09:24 AM

Great news! After hours of grinding and cutting and welding I've found an 89 HF shell completely rust free! Searching Craigslist and I stumbled upon it. I will post some photos of it when I get ahold of it! This will definitally speed the process up! :D

wyatta4 07-12-2012 01:56 PM

Holy smoke, all for a fuel line ?

I use Dropbox.
Makes a folder on your computer, and automatically syncs that with an online folder on Dropbox's servers.
Right-clicking on a file in the Dropbox folder on my own computer, gives me the online location for the file right away.
Can't be simpler - you get 2 GB free storage.

wyatta4 07-13-2012 07:37 PM

@euromodder Thank you! Fixed!

wyatta4 07-13-2012 07:41 PM

So I got the dash put back in today. I'm taking a break this weekend but I will have the motor in by Tuesday I'm thinking.

Has anyone here tried to put the MPGuino in the clock?
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-H...0/IMG_0401.jpg

I just ordered one from meelis11 here on Ecomodder. Hopefully it will be here soon.. :D

Yeah.. All for a fuel line. I spliced it in the middle (with the help of my pa) so I could get it out of the old and into the new easier with little to no bending.. Ill post a photo of that soon too.

wyatta4 07-19-2012 11:10 PM

Still no motor in... I had to wait for a motor mount to be ordered in and they ordered the wrong one!! Frik. :(

Here is a photo of the spliced fuel line..

And the dash installed with B-Quiet behind it..

Those are integra seats, came with the shell.. They are really comfortable but they don't fit right on the floor and my head hits the headliner if I sit up straight...

Photos taken with iPad in low light, excuse the quality.

wyatta4 07-19-2012 11:12 PM

Oh and I took the fuel tank out of the rusted HF and put it in the shell... That is a beach with no sand. Took me forever..

euromodder 07-20-2012 05:24 AM

It looks like you're saving a bit of weight as well, with a errrr ... reduced interior.

I'm not sure I'd want a spliced fuel line right next to me.

wyatta4 07-20-2012 01:44 PM

Haha oh don't be a pansie ;)

Frank Lee 07-20-2012 04:47 PM

^yup

HydroJim 07-20-2012 07:11 PM

That hose was "made in USA" so I'd say it's pretty safe

Agreed!!

Motor is In and running! The passenger Brake caliper has a striped thread so I need to get a new one of those and new brake pads. Getting all that and a oil filter and I'll get that stuff in and I'll be on the road!:)

Also got my MPGuino today, courtesy of Meelis11. Looks great, however installation into the clock spot seems very difficult. I started on a simple aluminum box about 30 min ago.. I'll finish that tomorrow and hopefully get it wired in.

Finally making progress

wyatta4 07-24-2012 07:22 PM

Everything is going great.

Just waiting on my brake pads and the passenger caliper..

Here are some photos

I can't get any info on my MPGuino hook up though... I found this Pinout. Hopefully it works.. But I can't find out if it matters what injector I tap into.. They all give out the same voltage.

MetroMPG 07-26-2012 11:50 AM

I see you posted your MPGuino question in the MPGuino subforum. Should get a response there.

Subscribed.

Is the camber on the passenger rear wheel messed up? Looks odd in the above photo.

Thank you!!
Hopefully I do..

Um no I dont think it is.. I think it's just the photo.. I will double check though. Didn't even notice that..

02ws6 07-26-2012 06:35 PM

I like the progress.. Keep up the good work!

PM me with a list of the rear interior pieces you may still need.. I have quite a few spare parts from a '90 HF thats in the yard now..

wyatta4 07-27-2012 02:12 PM

Well, got the caliper on and the brakes bled.. I bought an OEM muffler for $75 brand new in the bubble wrap yesterday and I will most likely mount that tonight. I might bring it in today and get it aligned, Ill see how the day goes.

Still don't have my MPGuino hooked up.....
