My Veg oil experimentations..
Running on Veg oil explained
After 1900 miles of trouble free WVO shenanigans in the Octavia, I thought I'd pop up a cheeky little guide on what to consider.. https://fuguttycars.wordpress.com/20...ic-vegetables/ http://thumbsnap.com/s/I58TxA9n.jpg |
Love the set-up! Been meaning to do something similar, only I can't get my hands on enough oil...
|
Have ordered proper sock filters for the WVO today- hopefully be here by the weekend!
|
got the sock filters for the WVO set up, 10micron on the Right, 5 Micron on the left
http://thumbsnap.com/s/FQub0wuK.jpg The bottle on the right contains the oil as bought, the bottle on the left is after the 10 micron filter- good improvement:) http://thumbsnap.com/s/aJG17ZyK.jpg |

TO be honest, for me getting the oil is not an issue.
I have a tame man who bulk buys it and de-waters it, then filters to 50 microns I just buy 100L at a time, and process to 10 microns |
As part of the general going over I did the usual fluid level checks.
Coolant/brake fluid all spot on, jowever the Oil level was ABOVE maximum.. This is a sign that the WVO is getting past the piston rings- and collecting in the sump. The car is still running well, no obvious running issues and no MPG drop Obviously this is not ideal! I took the most sensible path possible, based on the fact that it is a supercheap beater - I dropped some oil out the sump and topped it up to max with fresh oil. http://thumbsnap.com/s/Zwr52lB6.jpg Over the last 4000miles it appeared to be approx 500ml- will keep an eye on it. |
Hehe, saw this and responded on TDIClub as well.
Be careful about leaving this WVO in your sump, it will polymerize and hurt your engine due to lack of lubrication. Best idea is to do a complete oil change at 3000 mile intervals. |

Aye, did some reading on it-will keep an eye on it- reckon the 3k changes may be the way forward |
I've run heated wvo in my '02 Ford 7.3 Powerstroke since 2004. It does work but it does require attention.
I strongly suggest using a centrifuge to filter the oil. PA Biodiesel Supply : Waste Vegetable Oil Cleaning : Biodiesel Centrifuge : Motor Oil : Water Removal : WVO Filtering : Dewatering Centrifuge : WMO Filtration Units has some good units at much better prices than I paid back in the day. By the way, I've gotten as much as 367 miles to a gallon of diesel using heated wvo. That means I started and stopped the day driving on "store bought" diesel and spent most of the time running on free, filtered and heated veg oil. I'm glad to help in any way I can... including the mistakes I've made. Oh, and I'm in the chemical business so this is right up my alley. |
