Endeavours, final flight. That's a big boattail.
As they won't need it anymore, anyone interested in a second hand boattail? :D

I was going to make one myself out of coroplast for my space shuttle, but since one will be up for grabs...

the negative area present behind the shuttle without the boat tail makes the vertical stabilizer ineffective so the whole thing wouldnt steer very well . besides that, that large rear cone will hold over 400 ground mature trees

Boattail on the Space Shuttle!

My first thought was "Wow, a boattail!" :D

Holy ****, That's The Space Shuttle Outside My Plane Window!

I think that without that boattail attached to space shuttle 747 would be completely out of control because of the turbulences caused by a "cargo" :)

Remember, though, that the taper on that is much more aggressive than we can pull off because it is not in ground effect. :)

It was a very special day today, I watched the Space Shuttle fly over at about 2000 ft, on its way to Lompoc, Santa Barbara then Los Angeles . Last of an age

My base was one of their potential stop points if their was any danger. We had a NASA Super Guppy land and take of a month ago during sturgis rally.

I just heard yesterday about the 400+ trees they have/or will cut down on the streets that the shuttle will be trailered on to the museum.
I hear that there is a promise to replant 2 to 1 for every one cut down. I understand that the trees in question are about 20 something years old.

I am not here today to fuss, or cry about the tree situation.

I was just thinking that there should be someway, shape, or form that the shuttle could be airlifted by 2 monster helicoptors carefully spaced for blades apart protection/weight distribution, that on a chosen calm wind free day might be a better
manner!

I'm probably dreaming as I'm sure the shuttle is quite heavy. Probably too heavy for my idea???

what about all the pollution caused by those huge helicopters to move the thing and second its probably impossible

I dont see what the fuss is about cutting down the trees. They were planted by the city 20 years ago and now they are cutting them down. Big deal. Plus they are replacing them with twice as many.

My wife got to see it fly over in Las Cruces NM, they all ran out of the building to see it. I used to refurbish the manuvering thrusters for them years ago at WSTF (Jonsons Space Center)
