New with a 2000 Sunfire
Just joined and have a 2000 Sunfire. Want to get the fuel economy up as currently it is under 30 MPG. I have changed oil (non synthetic, as i have a small leak), Tires are at max pressure, and recently had the subframe, fuel filler tube, LR strut, and muffler replaced. (Now have a high piched whine at 3000rpm since muffler change).
What suggestions does one have to help with increasing the MPG? |

I bought the car ~2 months ago. I used to own a 98 sunfire that sipped the gas, but this one seems to inhale it. I also owned a 09 cobalt that did better on gas than this sunfire.
The 98 was a 2 door with no AC and a 5 speed, and no options The 00 is a 4 door with AC and a 4 speed auto with most options. I know the Manual makes a difference, but i wouldn't think it would be that huge. |
Welcome to the site. Auto or manual transmission? The auto is hard to get good mileage in, I had an automatic 97 Sunfire that I struggled to top much more than 30 mpg in during summer, in winter no way.

I am reading your thread now about your '97 Sunfire. |
I filled up today. 12.14 gal on 301.6 miles. Averaging 24.8 MPG.
Want to get the car to 30 MPG. |
The main key with mine was getting the torque converter to lock up. For me, that meant I had to be going 45 mph or higher. Below that mileage was horrible.

My commute is ~15 miles one way with the speed limit between 55 and 65 mph.
24.8 mpg is not much worse then the cobalt was at ~27. |
