New here, just bought a civic too

What's up everyone. I'm new here and just recently bought a 1999 civic lx sedan manual. Is this a decent platform? My best tank was 40.5 mpg but has recently dropped to low 30's because I'm having misfiring issues which makes it hard to drive eco when you're flooring rpms to keep the car alive. Hopefully I can fix the issues before I put any money into mods. So far I have replaced the plugs/wires and air/fuel filters so fingers crossed.

EDIT: fixed car (cap/rotor was very very bad) she cleans up well though which wasn't a lot of work, bought it from the original owner with 119k miles.

Welcome. The sixth gen civic with a manual transmission is a great platform. Next step to cure the miss fire is a new cap and rotor for the distributor

It's a Civic, it's OBDII, it's a manual. Well worth getting it back into shape. Welcome!

Your second step (after she is running like a top) is to buy a ScanGauge. Initially calibrate it to +13% and go from there.

Welcome to the site!

I agree with mechman600, a scangauge (or other instrumentation) is definitely a huge help.

Good luck with the Civic. It is a great platform for good mileage.

It's a great car for mpg, once you get it fixed. That's first priority.

Then a scangauge (or ultragauge if you prefer). I had mine adjusted to 1.8L instead of 1.6, coming out to 12.5%, similar to mechman's 13% but it's only 2 clicks to adjust.

Thanks everyone, honestly wasn't expecting such a warm response.. I'm definitely going to go with the scangauge II soon to as well. Good news is my car stopping misfiring this morning, no idea why but i'm gonna hope it stays that way.

Misfirings can be a real PITA. BTW maybe you could consider to upgrade its ignition to some distributor-less setup.

Is it a decent platform: yes, regardless of what it is.

It doesn't matter what you drive. What you do with it is what's important. If you're on a quest for good fuel economy, that's a good place to start.

One quick thing you can do is disconnect the plug to your O2 sensor. If it runs smooth, you may have a bad or an incorrect O2 sensor.

Even though it may run better, you will get very poor mileage with it disconnected.

Good Luck!
