New with 96 Civic Hatchback
Hey guys glad to be a part of these forums! I'm Travis and this is my 1996 Midori Green Civic. It's got just over 200,000 miles, and just achieved 40mpg using some of the strategies I've been reading on here. I look forward to learning more and meeting you guys. :)

Oh and just in case anyone cares, here are some of the things I've done to it so far:
Polished Mugen RNR wheels Acura Integra GSR cloth seats Megan Racing coilovers and a lot of OEM extras :) |
Welcome to the site. It sounds like you're already doing pretty good with the car. Do you have any modifications planned for the car?
|
I have a few ideas in mind for the car. Mainly some JDM modifications though. Been searching these forums to find some simple aero mods I could try.
|
Welcome!
That top photo is great ... like the colour, too. Top bit of advice is to get a fuel economy display in there. Instant and resettable average feedback will let you adjust the nut behind the wheel even more. Fortunately you've got OBD2, so lots of options. |
Right, I've been researching MPGuino the past week. Do you have any other recommendations?
And thanks! The color is called Midori green, and they only came out in 1996 models. :) glad you like it! |

Popular plug n play options are the Scangauge-2, Sg-e or Ultragauge.

Welcome!!
What code is your civic's engine? |
It's the stock d16y7. Pretty decent (but slow) motor.
|
Hi! I have a soft spot for a 96 with D16Y7. Is yours a stick? It can offer a whole lot of mileage if you push for it. I second (and third and fourth etc) the call for a gauge. Seeing what affects mileage in real time is the best mileage improver there is. I have the Scangauge-II.
Short-shift it (2000 rpm), keep about 1/2 throttle when you're accelerating, use neutral whenever you're not accelerating. |
Yeah it's a 5 speed. Just replaced the clutch last month so I've been enjoying that. :)
And I've been using those strategies you mentioned and have seen good results so far! This weeks goal is to get 42 mpg. |
Is it a DX or a CX? I believe the CX got better (lower rpm) gears. What's your rpm at 60 mph?
I topped out at about 45 mpg before getting a gauge. |
It's a DX. It actually does not have an RPM gauge. Not even a clock come to think of it haha.
|
Well after doing some research it looks like I'll be getting the Scangauge ll. I'm going to see how this tank goes first and I'll update you guys around Thursday.
|
Yeah, I had the same lack of Tachometer. You can use mph as a rough guide though. To shift at roughly 2000 rpm, you want to shift at 10, 20, 30, 40 mph. And 50 if you had a 6th gear :(. If you're just cruising on local streets and not accelerating, 5th is plenty good at 30 mph.
|
Wow ok I usually have it in 4th while cruising at 30-35mph, but I'll try 5th gear this week. I also read that Scangauge has a Tach on it so that's good. I'll try to add more pictures soon.
|
Yup, keep upshifting until it lugs, then back off a gear. :)
Kidding - sort of! You definitely want to be in the highest possible gear once you've finished accelerating. Downshift if you need power. It's a major way manual transmission drivers can smash their cars' EPA ratings in urban driving. EG: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...cra-30059.html |
Well it's day 3 of my new driving style, and I'm at 150 miles and only a quarter tank has been used. Still have to get used to driving 60 on the hi-way. Haha. I also have 40 psi in the tires as well.
I can't believe the difference this has made! I'll keep you all updated. |
Do you keep a fuel log? Start one here!
|
I just noticed your location. What (general) part of Dallas are you? I'm 2.5 hours east of you.

Haha! Longview. Came here for college and stayed.
I've got family in Wylie, not far from you. |
Wow!! So you never saw my car around town? It was on Acura Integra GSR wheels at that time. Either way, small world!
|
Allen / McKinney here as well
|
Very cool!
Well just wanted to update my progress so far. Today I just hit half a tank of gas at 273 miles. I can't believe the difference my driving style is making. Driving how I was last month, I'd have about a quarter tank or less left. I will update with my final number at my next fill up. (If that ever happens haha) |
Finally filled up the tank today at 472 miles.
|
Congrats!
Mpg? |

Now that you have a full tank to report, start a fuel log. |
The tank is about 10.4 gallons, so I'm guessing around 45 mpg. Not bad!
And Scangauge ll will be my next purchase for my car. Can't wait to start using it. |
Do you usually note the exact gallons pumped? You should do that -- Take your receipt! You'll need that info to calibrate the gauge too.
|
I see. I remember it took 10.4 gallons to fill up earlier this afternoon. I'll keep a more accurate log in the future.
|
Nice, definitely keep a fuel log with a small pocket size note book with the date, gallons filled, and trip mileage per tank. The fuel log is also a great way to track maintenance like when you do oil changes and the air filter.
Seriously though if you ever want to get rid of those heavy chrome wheels I'm down the street from you lol |
Not chrome, just polished :)
Only about 8lbs a wheel. |
Nice result at the pump!
Polished Mugen RNR wheels - Someone on the Fit forums is selling a set. I'd love them, but they're too pricey for my budget. You just about can't find a lighter wheel, for any price. Somehow, I suspect Chrysler Kid knows this. ;) |
If it hasn't already been mentioned you can swap clusters to gain the tach. Don't worry about the miles on the cluster you pick up because you can swap out just the speedometer assembly and keep your miles in tact.
